Was hoping this prof would turn out to be a crackpot, but no, he's a legit expert in this area.

Dr. Li Wenliang, the whistleblower and doctor who was responsible for spreading the news of the coronavirus has sadly passed away (apparently from said virus). Because of this man, a bunch of corrupt ******* officials were disciplined harshly (he essentially forced Beijing to take action and got those Wuhan local officials in a great deal of trouble). Now I'm not here to say whether or not those same people that got punished had anything to do with him catching the coronavirus, his work probably caused that.

But something does not sit well with me--even though he (not even on purpose, I may add) helped get a bunch of irresponsible, boot-licking officials removed, their friends and compatriots probably still had the reach to do something bad to him if they wanted to. Is his death suspicious? Or was it his extreme fatigue in treating countless patients combined with a nasty virus that caused his untimely death? It's not up for me to say.

But what I will say is that he's being almost unanimously being praised on Chinese social media by laowais and locals as a great man and a great doctor who laid it all on the line to help in the fight against the coronavirus. We're still on break over here in Beijing, it's been extended because of how contagious the coronavirus can be. Overall, things seem pretty safe and contained in the capital city. Hope everyone in Wuhan takes care and stays inside as much as possible.

Is it possible that the summer Olympics are cancelled?

Only if it spreads throughout Japan... Otherwise I doubt it. However, I think that the Chinese athletes will have to go through extra scrutiny in order to compete.

So sad. And honestly a little odd, in terms of probability, if it's really 2% lethal and he was a healthy, middle-aged person. Disturbing either way.

most of us “normal” folks wouldn’t care one bit. What do I mean by normal? You know, the 95%+ of the worlds population that isn’t an athlete family member or meaningfully economically tied to the Olympic s happening. Delay it a year. Why risk it?

Of course I’d personally go farther... in the sense of we (the world) should be taking much more extreme measures here. Even if the personal worst case scenario doesn’t happen to you - your or a family members death, it will ultimately happens to thousands most likely AND effectively it seems like this is a virus here to stay.... forever. We should be doing everything we can to limit anything close to a worldwide pandemic, give science a chance to catch up, and “suffer” the short term economic consequences. Imo.

for those that say the flu is also bad. Yes... it is!! I have flu type A right now. It sucks. Treating it as best I can and slowly improving. That it sucks is even more the reason to push back against this new virus that seems to be worse than the flu from becoming a permanent strain on humanity.

May his soul rest in peace.

Until the end he kept his conscience clear and he fullfilled his duty as a medical professional.
I also read that another 28 year old doctor died from heart attack due to exhaustion.
These people are true heroes and lighthouses of hope and an example to everyone in these dark times.

I hope that you are doing fine Roomba.
I read that it is possible that not every american coming from China will have to be on guarantine in the state facilities, only those from Hubei. But I am sure you have contacted the embassy and have better information.
    Take care.

They put all the known data so far ( RO, mortality rate, confirmed cases) on the most advanced AI neuron systems and you don't want to know what its predictions for this epidemic were.

Let's just say that if cancelling the Olympics is our biggest concern we will be very fortunate.

Can you give me the source of this ?
At this point it is well established that it is a zoonotic disease, evolved from a bat coronavirus likely through an intermediate species (snake?).

The doctors are really the ones that are holding all together in Wuhan, from what I'm told. Doctors from all over the China have voluntarily headed over to Wuhan to help combat the virus. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them.

I'm doing well, all things considered. Lots of us are going to just ride it out over here instead of heading back to the states unless it gets really bad. If there was one thing that I wish would carry over to after the epidemic is done it's this: cleanliness! Everyone I know now is adopting excellent hygiene habits, and I hope when we resume our weekly basketball sessions I don't have to smell anybody's stanky-ass sweat/ unwashed t-shirt from last week...

Also the infamous Beijing traffic jams is completely gone. No more chaos, just smooth sailing.

Trying to establish a fatality rate based on deaths per case is no more accurate than establishing a recovery rate based on recoveries per case.

    right?

How many recoveries have been reported and confirmed? Seems like we're doing rates without following the life of the illness per patient.

you think they are finally going to ban these 'wet markets' for wild animals?
obviously , this might be the cause of this mess. secondarily , it's gross

I want a more clear answer re: naturally occuring vs. engineered origins. Seems like I've seen at least two respected experts opinions that it's the latter...

I certainly hope so...I've tried fried scorpion and fried cicada larvae and river shrimp before, but I'd assume you can't catch any diseases from them because of how different we are from bugs. If this horrible virus can finally cause those icky markets to be completely banned instead of being a wink-wink kind of thing, then that would be a silver lining.

I never judge based on what someone eats, especially if they're bred for it and killed humanely, but some wild-caught animals are NOT MEANT TO BE EATEN! In my experience it seems that especially in modern China most northerners eat Pork, Chicken, Beef and Mutton in that order and usually don't eat anything exotic besides some invertebrates on occasion. But China is such a huge country that cuisine can be completely different province to province. People in South China even (used to?) eat monkeys. I'm pretty sure you can catch all sorts of nasty things from that.
