Just an aside, I know that this reactor is brought up a lot in anti-nuclear-power demonstrations (along with 3 mile island, which was one big PR nightmare, but not dangerous), one of the major points in the defense is that we (the US, and probably france, britain, anyone in there right mind) use reactors with a negative void coefficient and so while they are still somewhat dangerous, you have a much greater chance of the reactor simply stopping, rather than the reaction running out of control.
Man, the whole situation is just tragic. I'm basically speechless right now. All of this makes you really appreciate life as we know it.
