Seems like Tilman PR. But we'll know very soon either way.

Fertita sounds really similar to another millionaire leader who says multiple different things to different people.

Good news is, we identified who is one of his outlets.

In 2018 from the dumb owner himself.

"We know we're going to be in the luxury tax, and if you want to compete for a championship, I feel like unless you get real lucky, you're going to be in the luxury tax," Fertitta told ESPN

you talk too much. shut up

    It’s probably more like:

    1) I want to win.

    2) I’d also like to avoid the tax.

    3) if you find a deal that can do both, I want that.

    4) if you can only accomplish #1, come back to me and we will see how much the move improves the team and decide if it’s sufficient to justify the tax.

That seems like the most reasonable position for Fertitta to take. It’s never all or nothing. Now if it’s purely cost cutting that makes the team worse, then that’s an entirely different discussion.

He has said this even as we literally traded away a promising player in Melton and 1st round picks to dump contracts. And now we don't have any contracts that we can use to match salaries in a trade without giving up a significant piece. We've ducked the luxury tax consistently when our window is supposed to be now.

If this is true, great. If it's not true, who'd really be shocked?

I think this is most reasonable. The optimist in me thinks he actually would sign off on a deal that puts Houston in the luxury tax under the rationale that 1) so few teams are above the tax this year it's not like they are foregoing much in terms of luxury payments and 2) no matter what they'll have to gut the team next year anyway so they'll be under the tax, might as well go for it this year. Ugh, even my optimistic take is completely cynical.

I could only afford 1 rainforest cafe visit. Bill came out to $130 for salads and kids meals.
