Boo hoo, China wants to talk about fair? How about all the intellectual property they've stolen and continue to do so? ...or the spying at our major universities?

There's no way in hell that number is correct. I'd say multiply that by at least 10 and then we may be in the ballpark.

Do you think China is lying by a factor of 10, that they can't properly track the deaths, or a combo?

As my Chinese friends keep joking with me, with a mix of sadness, "oh, our government tracks people pretty well."

Not saying this is 100% accurate but he does have a lot of interesting videos on his twitter page.

That's probably wise, just based on the authenticity of the average internet video.

I think it's possible PRC are intentionally under-reporting to stave off mass economic impact or societal panic. But the science fiction scenarios don't square with second-hand info I consider authentic from friends with relatives in the area. Even someone I know in the Bay Area currently (for precaution) in home self-quarantine for two weeks, following a recent return from China. The estimates that this will peak in China in April and that thousands will die of the virus seems pretty accurate. Could be as high as 10,000 or more in the end. Wouldn't that be like a bad influenza or something?

I'm just always leery of anything on the internet that makes me say "gee whiz, that seems as scary and alarming as possible," because that's a well-established business model of old and new media alike. Gotta grab that viewer right by the amygdala!

I mean, in the case of a random quote from an alleged funeral home, how many funerals do they do on an average day, with no outbreak? (Rhetorical question.)

Who knows but when you look at the totality of things nothing indicates things are as minor as they are being reported by China. I’m not worried about dying because of this virus but nothing indicates this is like a bad flu either.

They've now found that it lives in human **** as well (just like SARS did)...this bodes well for China and India.

Back in the SARS days, 1 guy in a Hong Kong high rise had explosive diarrhea and infected the entire building. Because of the viruses lived in his guts, and thus in his farts. No lie.

This one apparently behaves the same. I'll try to find the article.

And I'm not sure what vegan has to do with anything at this point.

Typhoid and cholera have been living in human feces as a transmission vector for centuries. Everything old is new again.

Call me old fashioned but I think a subtitle to declare that you're using a linear scale is unnecessary. Depending on your audience, I could see the argument for clarifying that one is using a log scale, but this? Nah.

I looked again and this study was not on this specific type of corona virus so this may not be valid at all.

This scare factor with this virus is the uncertainty with its potential and the possibility that it was engineered as a bioweapon, and finally that we collectively have no immunity/experience with it (meaning those who catch it could suffer severe illness). If we're just comparing numbers - then not so scary - H1N1 in 2009 infected 55 million Americans alone and I think resulted in about 20,000 deaths here in the US.
