This is how you destroy a Republic, from the inside. No one in the GOP wants to hear it, but Trump will destroy the US system if elected again and he will destroy GOP along with it. History will be the judge of all this.

It's really Trump's 30% cult that is allowing this. I really think the rest of the country is about done with him. I guess we'll see later this year.

It really is as @dobro1229 said, this is a culture war for many of them. They feel that Trump is their last hope to overturn the gains of progressive social victories. I think those gains are forever permanent and they will just have to live with it. The demographic change isn't going away because of some flimsy wall either.

As for the Senators and officials that support Trump, they are just cowards. More worried about losing their jobs than upholding any kind of standards or law. There's none for Trump. The only hope is that the GOP loses so soundly in this election that it will be CLEAR moving forward that they screwed up. I'm talking Democrats holding the House, Senate, and Executive branch. The GOP losing all of their power is a great way to erase this decision and show that this should not be precedent going forward. We'll see what happens I guess.

Yep, they still won't do it.

God Emperor Trump doesn't want witnesses and they will do as told.

Democrats are already running ads on cowardly Republicans complicit in a cover up...hopefully, these ads are fruitful.

I agree in general. However I think the Dems realized that dragging out impeachment by going through the courts would have dominated the election and not in a good way. The Trump MO has been to drag whatever out as long as possible.

He is the favorite to win in 2020. You sound like you'd rather attack people than debate. Try to keep it civil.

No this is silly - to ignore the fact that fighting in court could have taken years - and the very nature of the impeachment - election interference - had to be resolved before the 2020 election due to the nature of the crime Trump committed.

This just makes it seem like you are a partisan using spin to defend your party. There was never going to be bipartisan support - never. You have John Bolton essentially stating Trump committed a crime, and the senate is unmoved. Trump can literally shoot someone on the street and get away with it.

I was by no means attacking you. That's absolute BS. I guess you think keeping it civil is agreeing with all your propaganda.

What's also BS is the thought that our democracy is dead and Trump is king - He will be gone no later than Jan.2024.

What's also BS is any idea that the Democrats are some kinda savior .... The entire system needs to be purged.

Nixon's impeachment began on May 9, 1974 and the SCOTUS ruled on the executive privilege issues on July 24, 1974, with a unanimous decision.

That's less than 3 months from the beginning of the inquiry , not 3 months from the date of issue of the EP.

Sorry dude , your argument just sunk especially when Pelosi held the articles for 30+ days before sending them to the Senate .... but we had to do it NOW!

That was without a fight in the courts. Expecting it to take 3 months is wishful thinking. Things are very different today with the hyper partisan loyalty to Trump. You are once again ignoring the facts that Republicans are playing obstructionists at every level.

The system is broken that is true, but Republicans have been the party to break it, and it won't get fixed until something far more significant happens - and that is Trump attempting to take absolute power such as declaring emergency powers due to some crisis. He is capable of doing that and if you don't think he well that's your naivete.

I don't know the exact timeline, but the subpoenas started in July 1973. It took over a year before the tapes were turned over after the Supreme court ruling.

    https://www.history.com/topics/watergate-scandal-timeline-nixon

    July 23, 1973
Nixon, who taped his conversations and calls in office, refuses to give Cox and Senate Watergate investigators the recordings, which became known as the “Nixon tapes.” The tapes were believed to contain critical evidence of a cover-up of Nixon’s involvement in the break-in; the previous month, Dean, the former White House counsel, acknowledged that he had talked with Nixon about the Watergate matter dozens of times. After Nixon refused to turn the tapes over, both Cox and Senate investigators issue subpoenas for the material.

    July to October 1973
Nixon files appeals in response to various subpoenas ordering him to turn over the tapes.

We know who is trying to rush this to a close. And why would the Democrats worry that this would "bump into" the state of the union address?

No wonder why trump and his trumplican enablers are blocking bolton's testimony... trump told bolton to call zelensky to ensure he would meet with Giuliani about his desire for investigations of Democrats, according to Bolton’s unpublished book.

And why other witnesses were blocked...

Aren’t they the prosecutors? If you talk about an independent prosecutor, that would run into the same court fight and take much longer to complete. It would likely be on the edge of the 2020 election or afterward.

70% of American want witness. Hard to get above that number.

A criticism I have of the mangers is not including a former republican in the team and not focusing more on the personal power loss of each senators - they are essentially given up their power to Trump and future executive. Laws and fund they pass in the future have little meanings when the POTUS can illegal withheld them. Senators personal pork projects can be approved by the legislative branch, signed by the president, then the president can essentially line veto the project he doesn’t like. That hurt. I don’t know if it make any difference but perhaps that can garner a few more republican support... probably not.

The NY Times has the manuscript. The State Dept may try to suppress parts of Bolton's publication on national security grounds, but the Times will end up publishing all the meatiest parts of it anyway now that it was been leaked (probably by Bolton, not that anyone will be able to prove it) to them.
