Looks like Crane is dead set on hiring someone exactly the opposite of Hinch. Those hoping for Hinch 2.0 will be sorely disappointed. They are going to hire someone that is old school baseball and runs the clubhouse like a dictator. Can't let the players have any leeway because they will be right back in the same place they are now. /sarcasm
Wonder if this is coming from Manfred, to try to make sure the yankees path is completely clear to the world series
This thought actually came across my mind with the expectation of further findings of more teams being involved. (hopeful wishing I guess). I guess I'm on the side that would be open to re-hiring them both with Crane saying everyone deserves a 2nd chance (thoughts of an under the table agreement). Continue the front of "we need to hire a new manager" but really keep it in house with Espeda and Putila/Gelles with chances of one or both of them coming back. Not sure if Crane would want to totally clean house.
It is weird that Crane appears to be ready to hire a manager before the new GM is hired. I wonder if this indicates that Crane will be taking a far more active role in baseball operations moving forward than he did during Luhnow's tenure.
Of course Manfred doesn't want the Yankees to spend $2.5 billion over the life of Gerrit Cole's 9 year contract and continue to have the Astros keep them out of the World Series. In this day and age of mercenary players going from one team to the next, punishing fans and a city by taking away 4 top draft picks seems ridiculous. Punish the coaches or players involved. Cora and Beltran were in Houston for one year, yet their actions have damaged the Astros franchise for years to come. What did the Yankees do? They went out and hired Beltran, just like the Red Sox got Cora. You don't think the Yankees were stealing signs last year? Yeah right. Cora even said so much in that post-game press conference. As a lifelong baseball fan, I STILL don't see anything wrong with stealing signs, electronically or otherwise. If anyone read Tim Flannery's remarks on it, those are my thoughts exactly.
