"It costs nothing to be nice." An old cliche but in this instance it seems it cost Luhnow and company A LOT to be mean (or to foster an environment where players, the press, and others were "mistreated" as the report says). We know finding new, and underhanded, ways to steal signs is a league-wide "issue." We've seen the reports about the Yankees and Red Sox. But it seems it took a disgruntled former player and member(s) of the press to blow the whistle on the Astros, forcing the league to act. Had the front office treated people with more respect it would have all stayed under the rug as it does with probably every other team in the league.
Absolutely! You piss of the media, you are done. Luhnow seemed to have pissed off a lot of media members, and that is why you only saw "think pieces" on domestic violence as it related to Osuna (but not Chapman), and sign stealing when it is clearly a league wide epidemic. It was relentless for the past 3 months.
Yup. Luhnow was the (often lazily-associated) face of so many negative PR stunts. It was too convenient to affix him to the problems. His biggest error was not befriending the media more. He was meticulous and calculated to a fault. People do not take kindly to that, especially when you ruffle feathers and go against the grain. I think Manfred forced the firing. I don’t see this as a move made solely by Crane. Who knows. What a shame. I really like Luhnow.
LOL predictably getting killed on twitter. Yahoo: "disgraced ex-Astros GM Jeff Luhnow" and a lot of "He threw Cora under the bus!"
Timing is a lot of life. I really want to see what happens to the Sox, and maybe the Yankees. Despite the draft hit, this is still a plum job in MLB. I've no doubt Crane will have his pick of GM and Manager. I wish Hinch and Luhnow all of the best, and I hope they put their year off to good use.
That Beltran, and other players involved, is going to skate on this is absolute garbage. All hail the Players' Union! Yes, I know that if players were also sanctioned, it'd hurt the Astros even more than this.
How do we know if he was the best GM? Maybe the team would have completely sucked without the cheating? If you are only going by scores/results/championships, none of that is legit now
MLB just hates Houston. If we were a NY team, a slap on the hand. The Patriots continues to cheat, yet the coach is still there and only names that we don't recognize gets penaltized. I really hope the players back Hinch and Luhnow because they weren't involved with the idea by Cora, the mastermind. Some say the Stros is the best owner in town. Today, he made a bad choice.
