All the news about Iran has really made me think about North Korea. The biggest foreign policy casualty in the Iran blunder might be NK. Had the US had an effective implementation of the nuclear deal and stayed true to its word, I believe that is what they wanted in the end 3 years ago.

Kim Jung wanted to have a deal like that to lift sanctions and normalize relations. The ramp up of his nuclear program and provocative threats were designed... I believe... to get the US to the table for a deal like that.

Had the Iran deal stayed in place, I think we could have built a coalition to get a deal with NK too. So much for that. The next president has a ton of work to do thanks to 45.

I think it would be far more difficult to get a deal done with N. Korea because they already have nuclear weapons.

They know how powerful of a deterrent the weapon is in terms of the US and Western powers never even considering doing an invasion or regime change of the hermit kingdom. It's out of the question unlike Iran.

I do give Trump credit for meeting with Kim Jong Un personally. I think it was a good idea and maybe it did take Trump's unconventional touch to do it. That said I had very little expectations and Trump’s inflation of expectations, along with flat out lying about agreements, hasn’t helped. I also think his appeasement in regard to stopping joint military exercises with SK and threats to pullout military aid from SK if they don’t pay more have made the situation more difficult. Also while it might've taken Trump's unconventional style to get Kim to the table I don't think it's helping now. His "love affair" with Kim just seems odd and inappropriate given how we've practically gotten nothing from the negotiations and NK has gone back to issuing threats and bombastic languages. This is an area where yes Trump got an unprecedented meeting which opened the door but then we needed someone to take the negotiations seriously and realistically to make progress rather than someone seemingly more interested in inflating their own ego.

The situations with NK and Iran show chaos and contradiction from Trump, the current GOP and Trump supporters. You have them arguing that those who don't agree with strong military action towards an adversary are traitors and lovers of terrorists while simultaneously upholding appeasement, coddling and "love letters" towards another adversary and one that is potentially far more deadly than Iran.

Oh I agree that their reasoning for getting nuclear was different and is far more advanced than Iran which is why it was more difficult even for Obama to get them to the table.

But I do believe they want an agreement that removes sanctions and legitimizes them. They feel that nukes are their ticket to prevent regime change, but I don’t believe Kim Jung is suicidal enough to actually use them. That’s why a treaty establishing how measured he is, does a lot to legitimize him.

In the end the North Koreans bested Trump but miscalculated on him removing sanctions... which is likely what they are saying he deceived them about. So the North Koreans partially won, but we lost majorly.

We should care a little. Mostly because if his tactics for power and global acceptance is achievable for nearly every struggling 3rd world country if the US and our allies do nothing to curb those actions. Which ultimately leads to more global rise in dictatorships and oppression.

It’s less about the Rockets and more about the people of North Korea who have had to suffer for generations under the rule of the brutal dictators. It’s about future countries who the Russians will supply nuclear technology to in order to destabilize the West for their own power. Trump essentially told every other struggling world leader that this works so when in doubt .... go full dictator and threaten nuclear war.
