The Supreme Court sure was Johnny on the Spot after the 2000 election. You'd think this would carry the same weight.
This is why I was against impeachment @rocketsjudoka because now you see Trump is even more unhinged.
The more I learn about these Senate trials, the less it seems like a traditional trial. Normally both sides can subpoena witnesses. I thought the House impeachment hearings were analogous to a criminal grand jury proceeding, but that’s too much of an overstatement. The “prosecution” ie, democrats seeking removal, are now the minority in regards to the senate. Since the republican majority gets to set the rules for the trial, they’re more analogous to the “State/prosecution” who gets to present first and more or less dictate the flow of a trial. In short, it’s a strange burden shift and I still don’t get why the “defense” (democrats) wouldn’t get to subpoena new witnesses at trial. the whole thing is extremely bizarre and there should be uniform rules in place in case this ever happens again. None of this seems fair.
There is nothing to say Trump wouldn't be unhinged anyway. This would be like a CEO threatening a board that if they tried to fire him he would start acting erratically and hurt the company. The idea that the Executive would act inappropriately and abuse their power is exactly why the Founders put in impeachment.
That's a flawed analogy. Trump is starting wars to distract from an impeachment process that will fail to remove him from office. In a boardroom, the board can remove the CEO with a simple vote and it's done. There is no multi-step process or trial. Republicans are not shareholders, but representatives of shareholders who have a far greater interest in aligning with the CEO as if he goes, they go. Trump is not removable from office, the mechanism the founders created has failed. And not only has it failed, it has resulted in a more dangerous president.
Even without impeachment, Trump's re-election polls are a disaster, so he might anyway very well be bombing Iran as his new re-election strategy.
Exactly. Trump already in 2011 said that a President facing a tough reelection with lagging poll numbers would start a war with Iran. Impeachment shouldn't be held hostage that the President will abuse his power even further. That will truly be breaking the system that the Founders put in place. Also this idea that impeachment only matters if the President is removed ignores that the process already has exposed a lot of information about this Presidency that we didn't know before and if the Senate moves forward with testimony from people like Bolton there will be even more information out there.
can't let this thread slip to the second page. Guess it's time for Nancy to rev the ole' impeachment machinery back up again
Yep. It would appear moderate GOP senators will not break ranks and ask for more information. GOP united in burying the truth. Maybe Bolton will get subpoenaed.
