$50 max. So far I've barnstormed: Bar-related (go to Specs), Grill-related (go to Ace Hardware), Culinary-related (both, plus HEB). Flashlight or multitool were my other ideas. Not a gift for my party, trying to help an old guy out.
You're doing it wrong. It sounds like you're pitching genuine gifts; white elephant gifts are gag gifts. (Note: I participated in a white elephant gift exchange where I knew everyone else was bringing legit gifts, but I brought an impractical, unnecessary cooking accessory that was $5.)
My family usually brings some pretty crappy gifts. We have a $25 limit. I ended up with a 5 quart dutch oven. I think I did pretty good. I wrapped up a water hose and put $25 HEB card with. It was fun watching people grab it. They were all like oh no water hose and would pass it up. It was the last gift to go and the person that got it was happy with the HEB card.
We host an annual one and one time my wife’s work friends brought a legit gift, like a bath and body works gift basket, and won a box of douches.
It's at the local VFW, they know how to have a large time: catered food, live band, cheap drinks, all that good stuff.
I thought for White Elephant, everyone just went to Urban Outfitters and picked anything off of their section of trinkets.
A roll of toilet paper wrapped in plastic wrap. Slide in a nice gift card in the roll so people can't easily see it.
