Ronnie Nunn also called Harden’s step back a travel until the league finally stepped in and said it wasn’t.

Coach Nick isn’t someone I hold in high esteem. When the Rockets won 65 games and played the Warriors he said the Rockets could maybe push it to a 5 game series.

Lol you don’t have to play in the NBA to know about that move, but if you must know I’ve played against NBA players. FYI you can see that move at the local ymca

I would like to see a link to this, because from what I remember he’s generally defended Harden’s step back maneuver. That isn’t to say that Harden has *never* traveled on his step back and gotten away with it.

LOL, ok. Not sure how that’s relevant to understanding basic NBA rules and how they are called, but whatever.

I have no doubt you can see that move in pickup games. It looked like a violation to me in slow mo, and others who probably know better than the average fan, but I could be wrong.

    Is Nunn really objective?

It’s always nice to read what they say, but I find Borgia and Javie are not in agreement with Nunn enough to no longer treat Nunn as objective opinion, anymore. Sad to say, since he’s the most assessable. (I wonder if he’s using the Internet to supplement income, now).

And note, Nunn and Coach Nick do make money together producing vid content, fwiw.

Nunn has been proven wrong with his trying-to-remain-relevant comments in the past, and I’ve seen him get embarrassed by the internet and have a hard time admitting he was wrong. He’s become a disappointing source, imo. I stick with Borgia and Javie. They are either the official word (Borgia) or more in-tune and objective to the league’s interpretation of the rules. Nunn comes off as wanting to convince others of his personal interpretation.

    "Clear Carry" of crossovers

There is nothing clear about that being a carry, imo. When it is a carry, there is much more of a pause or moving ball from one point to another, than here. There are vids at NBA Official to demonstrate. Those are by their definition the “Clear” carries/palming.

Maybe league will make an example of this as “Clear”, but I doubt it versus other crossovers.

Stopping a crossover at its beginning with a still image and arguing about hand under ball would bring the Internet to a crawl, if we discussed every one. So league has two other requirements of a carry.

This isn’t clear, because If he continues that dribble for a regular crossover, no one questions that. So, he doesn’t even move it enough from one point to another to complete a common crossover. He certainly doesn’t pause the ball from below.

    My Understanding of Hesi/In-Out Dribbles

What happens in a Hesi/In-Out dribble is that hesi motion is slicing the crossover halfway through. Halfway through its move from one point to another, the player slices the ball with a downward motion from top of ball. Redirecting a ball from the top is completely legal, save palming it from top. Harden slices the ball with a downward brush from top of ball.

The fact his hand (for a split, split second) is on side of ball extending under it is not enough for a carry, imo, as it doesn’t satisfy one of the two other requirements of a carry. Most all that motion is Harden clearly on top of ball if not hand off the ball.

Of course, this is all my interpretation. But it does fit the rules and all the crossovers that happen every game dozens of times.

Thanks, and you’re right that it’s not a clear violation in the NBA (I’ll retract my earlier comment where I said it was, before looking more closely at the rule book and the NBA video rule book). But it’s not a clear legal move either.

fwiw: I was referring to Nunn and Coach Nick saying Clear Carry.

I also don't think PG thought it was a carry. I think he thought (like I did) that it was a double dribble, which we see now, it wasn't.

You're right; it's more clearly legal if he never started the move from the side/under ball, like he did. I've seen CP3 and Wall execute spin inside-out dribbles entirely from the top, but we've also seen thousands of crossovers (especially Durant's) start with hand under, and more under than this. imo, crossovers are the litmus test, and they move ball from one point to another more than Harden did, here. The league might neuter Durant's dribbling ability, if they make "hand under" the only criteria of a carry.

btw: Notice how Nunn is still not convinced Harden avoided touching the ball with his left hand..."Either way, it's illegal." (He said thrice last night the chances of a double dribble) That was a wicked -- (likely, heavily practiced) -- fake gather, that got PG to jump. It's comments like that, where Nunn continues to promote something with no screen shot -- seemingly to save face -- when nearly everyone is in agreement that it didn't happen, that has me questioning him in general now vs guys like Borgia and Javie.

There was no carry, Harden's hand was never under the ball nor did the ball stop moving.

There was no double dribble because at no time did James touch ball with both hands at same time.

That was just a nasty hesi/in & out/ push thru combo. The haters are really shyting themselves silly going full Zapruder looking for the shooter on the hill.

    Ridiculous.

Paul George fouled him atleast twice but the refs were letting it go all night except only when it came to Kawhi. He was getting bailed out all night

    Mixed...like some cake mix?

C'mon, you can't use the same word in your simile. That's just lazy. Not unless you're this guy:

Debating carry vs. non-carry is insanity.

If you take every game last night and pick out every ball handled that was probably a carry by strict interpretation of the rules, of the hundreds of candidates, I'd bet this particular move by Harden is well under the 50% mark in terms of egregiousness. It's the NBA.

When I saw the move in regular time, I was somewhat unimpressed by the hype, mainly because I'm spoiled by James being an unstoppable force of nature. However, when I saw the slow motion of his hands...damn, man. That was beautiful. In normal time, I thought he touched the ball with both hands. Only in slow-mo can you see that it actually barely didn't, and only in slow-mo can you then move on to the argument that it was carry. Reality: it was was all too fast and intricate for anyone to see anything. Get Harden a Vegas show after he retires.

Also, I've read this entire thread, and y'all are missing possibly the most important thing. Harden just torched George to the right.

He keeps creating moves and tricks that have people going back to the NBA bible to see if any rules were broken.

If James Harden had played in the Middle ages he would have been the most renowned bearded heretic.

Don't want to throw any water here, but I honestly thought that was double dribble.
When he put both hands on the ball like he was going to come up to shoot
and then put it back on the floor again, I'm shocked they didn't call it.
Even the replay shows he put both hands on it. But we'll TAKE IT
