exactly...I can’t get down with getting on Yao because I don’t believe that anyone here would be willing to hop on a flight to China and start speaking up for Morey ready to accept whatever punishment that brings

we can all do it here because it doesn’t affect us, our jobs, our family...it doesn’t affect anything

I get it you want Yao to be a martyr
I’d prefer that girl in crouching tiger to be my martyr cause she’s better looking

or maybe you should pick Zhou Qi
Hey Morey gave him a job
And he’s younger and doesn’t have a kid

Good point. Yao loves China, as many do.

It isn't all brainwashing and evil commies over there like many would have you believe. Beautiful culture and there is undeniable wisdom in their long-term strategy. OBOR anyone?

Regardless, I hope this works out so I can go eating in Hong Kong again... Dim-Sum all day baby!!! :D

Thanks for completely ignoring the conversation in the private message you sent me. Real respectful.

(for other people reading this @tinman messaged me privately acting as if Yao speaking up against the silencing of a billion people was martyr-ship. I said that not every leader must become a martyr. It doesn't work that way. )

If you're gonna come at me tinman.. be "pure".

I will denounce him not in an attack but for the same reason he denounced the Rockets. Loyalty. He is loyal to his family and their safety and I am loyal to my team and the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Everyone has a choice, he made his and I make mine. Both for good reasons.

There are many people much smaller than Yao who have the sacrificed their own lives to stand up for something they believe in. So who is the "bigger" man here?

I guess we have two versions of what pure means then.

One type of conversation in private, then switching it up in public.. that ain't pure. Time to rethink.

Is it worth losing your hero to earn your white knight badge?

I edited the title to better add to future conversation as many people are simply reading the title and responding.

I was not trying to get people to believe I was denouncing Yao's ability on the court or even denouncing his ethics, just discussing whether he's a bit overrated due to the mirage of cultural impact. He clearly did nothing for China and US relations except create a dichotomy in how the relationship between the NBA in China is portrayed and realistically is. He put money into the league's pocket and created a new way for the Chinese government to keep citizens entertained and distracted.

Yao was nothing but a transaction for both parties and he has no control over that but we have the ability to reassess his significance on the franchise based on the events that have unfolded.
