You know, the thing about Springer is that he started the year so well, we were talking about Springer for MVP if he kept it up. Then he got injured, and everyone accepted that it's unfortunate that he got injured because that would keep him out too long to put up MVP numbers. What a shame, but it happens. *intensely stares at baseball writers about to cast a vote for Trout*
its crazy. dude can win a ws. manage injuries and that includes to your top players, build trust and confidence in the next man up to hold the fort and yet he still gets looked at as an idiot or makes stupid decisions over and over. what a shame. there isn't a perfect guy out there but the amount of trust he has in this team is certainly something special in this one
Every fanbase thinks their manager is a moron at some point. It says more about sportsfans than it does about managers.
Cole had a slightly better season than JV, but JV should win. A fourth runner-up finish with only one first would be disgusting. Co-winners is best.
Cole was one win away from winning the pitching “triple crown”. He set an all time strikeout percentage record. He was unbeatable the last 4+ months of the season. If Verlander didn’t have the no-hitter, I think it would be Cole for sure.
Because many of these posters think they know better than the manager. "I can do that better...IF I had the opportunity..." is the thinking. You can see it for Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, etc... When the bullets are flying, it is a little different.....
He’s also base running instructor so you can double up on the dumbasses accusations if it makes you feel better.
I feel fine, but if you think he's telling them to do anything that Luhnow and Hinch don't want, I don't know what to tell you. That you think guys like Altuve are teachable at this point...well...there you go. You can't learn instincts.
Honestly, not that many by my count. Few are consistent. More pop out of the woodwork during a game like the first Angels' game of this series, but that's more emotion of the moment than I think consistent. For Clutchfans, a very emotional board, I'd say it's a remarkably small number that are down on Hinch. As it should be. I'd say let's direct any ire towards ATTSW for not putting their Astros Bases Loaded episodes online. They're really good, and they spend A LOT of time with A.J. going over how he manages. It's very inspiring and comforting stuff, but I can't just point to an episode on Youtube and say, "Hey, watch this segment; it explains things; you'll feel better."
Can we please hire Bagwell as baserunning coach or consultant? Like how I've been wanting the Rockets to hire Calvin as free-throw consultant for years for the big guys. These things matter at critical times.
He does that every spring training. Mostly, the only coach that can actually affect what happens on the field is the pitching coach. The pitcher is in charge of the action, everybody else is just reacting to what happens once the ball leaves his hand. You can work on his grip, his release point, his plant foot, his follow through, etc...and get it down to where it's literally repetitive motion with slight adjustments. The pitcher doesn't have to make millisecond decisions in his brain regarding what to do. He knows exactly what he wants to do and how he wants to do it. You can teach the batter all of the fundamental mechanical things you want, you can get his timing, his hips, his hands, his head, all of it, you can work on it until it's perfect, but the one thing you can't do is make that almost instantaneous decision between his eyes and his brain and his body for him. FB or slider? Ball or strike? Same with fielding and baserunning. You can teach how to read the ball off the bat and not take a false step, you can teach footwork on the infield, how to plant properly while on the run, all of it. But you can't teach that instant that tells Jake or Adam Everett or whoever to go right there right now. You can teach guys how to measure a good lead, you can teach guys how to cut bases properly, how and where to slide, how to read a pitcher's move to first, but you can't make them react in that instant. Sometimes you just have to trust the coach...b/t 2nd and home you can't see the play so 3B coach is your guide, same with rounding 1st but most guys now are looking at the ball and ignoring the 1B coach, so vaya con dios. It's a mixed bag with the Stros on the bases, some guys are great, some guys are horrible, most are in the middle. The edict from Luhnow/Hinch is to be aggressive, and they are for better and worse. They've had the same philosophy on the bases for several years now, if they thought it sucked I imagine they would have changed it by now.
Yeah. Simply not true at all. He did something stupid that could’ve hurt the home field advantage. He has made stupid moves before. Yet, any real fan of the Astros is happy that Hinch is the manager. And over the last few seasons, the criticism of Hinch on this board has died down significantly. Yes, fans will still second guess some of his individual moves because it’s baseball and this is America. Still, there are some on this board who can’t handle any criticism of the coach at all. For some reason they think that if one criticizes Hinch, they must be 100% against him. I could say that I dont like Hinch’s socks and someone on here would remind me that he won a WS.
