Here are the Finals teams for the past 9 seasons and where they rank in their conference in team True Shooting Percentage in the regular season:

    2018-19: Warriors (1st), Raptors (2nd)
    2017-18: Warriors (1st), Cavs (1st)
    2016-17: Warriors (1st), Cavs (1st)
    2015-16: Warriors (1st), Cavs (1st)
    2014-15: Warriors (1st) Cavs (2nd)
    2013-14: Spurs (1st), Heat (1st)
    2012-13: Spurs (2nd), Heat (1st)
    2011-12: Thunder (1st), Heat (1st)
    2010-11: Mavericks (2nd), Heat (1st)

For some reason, 2009-10 and before doesn't really follow this trend as closely.

The point of this thread as it relates to the Rockets is, will they improve their TS% from last season? They ranked 3rd in the NBA in TS% last season, and 2nd in the West behind the Warriors. The Clippers were 3rd in the West, right behind the Rockets, and the Clippers improved a good bit this off-season.

Russell Westbrook is not nearly as efficient as Chris Paul was, but could he help raise the efficiency of the team as a whole? For example, pushing the pace could lead to more easy buckets in transition... something that the Rockets didn't really get with Chris Paul. Paul was a maestro in the half-court, but half-court offense is generally less efficient overall than transition.

Cherry picking data leads to the results we want to see.

@bmd what are you trying to get at here? The trend is definitely there. I'm not sure why you left off prior seasons. If the evidence was cold hard facts, just post what you found all the way. Otherwise we're just looking at a chicken little sky is falling scenario.

2012 team had harden and westbrook, so at least there's hope for a 'chip. westbrook needs to resurrect MDA as a nba elite level coach in my opinion. Paul didn't elevate our organization by starting that fight with rondo. Right now MDA is not an elite level coach. The job that mike Malone did as coach of nuggets earned Malone awards in addition to the fact that mike Malone coached in all-star game.
playoff time is the best indicator.

A lot of people overlooked the two back to back three's harden gave up to iggy at the beginning of third quarter. Actually iggy hit three 2nd half three's which went well with the two bombs that curry hit on cp3 and capaela.

Message heard loud and clear. Only question was rockets bench listening? Any window should imply an immediate trade of rivers, green and possibly even capeala during an Olympic year.

All of those teams had major bench production and don't forget Harden came off bench in 2012!

Great, my optimism for the season just took a little dive...I think everyone knows Westbrook isn’t quite as efficient as CP3.

Individually, that's true. But in the same way CP3's efficiency went up a little bit when he joined the Rockets, Westbrook's may go up a bit also. And again, the way Westbrook plays should get other guys some easy looks in transition. His ability to get to the rim should put a ton of pressure on defenses and get guys easy looks in the half-court. His rebounding can give the team more possessions per game, which helps the offense.

Teams are going to have their hands full with both Westbrook and Harden attacking. I'm optimistic that they'll be a better team.. they're just going to play differently than when they had CP3.

Hopefully Westbrook bring the team more fastbreak easy baskets.

There was a stretch of 19 years from Magic and Bird through Zeke and Mike and Dream where people swore you had to have a guy who starred on an NCAA Finals team (except for that one outlier year with a guy named Moses) to win an NBA championship.

    And then you didn’t.

Not too long ago I looked at the regular season net rating of all the finals matchups going back to like 2000 and I wanna say almost all of them had two top 5 teams in net rating going against each other at the end.

I think there may have been 1 or 2 teams who snuck in there that weren’t top 5, but were top 10.

Some of those Cavs teams were able to get away with being a ho-hum defense because of the chitty eastern conference. So you gotta at least be a top 10 defense. Maybe top 6? That is what the Rockets should shoot for.
