"The Texans refused to pay Clowney like an elite pass rusher. Coupled with their desperation to find a franchise left tackle to replace Duane Brown, who was traded to Seattle during the 2017 season because of a contract dispute"

    Seeing a pattern here folks?

Cheap on top of cheap!! CHEAP CHEAP mockingbird special good one

Jacob Martin- 3 sacks in 225 snaps
Jadeveon Clowney- 9 sacks in 902 snaps

Jacob Martin number of sacks in 900 snaps?
    12 sacks in 900 snaps.

Easy math and probably not realistic, but it would get pretty interesting if the kid gets anywhere near Clowney’s sack totals this year.

Sacks is not an accurate stat to really measure defensive players prowess. It doesn't take into account pressure, TFLs, or plays were the QB is wrapped up and throws it away. It's a really isolated stat that often time goes to the player who either gets lucky, or to the player with less attention. I don't understand why the typical fan is so drawn to sacks.

Jacob Martin QB hits per 900 snaps- 32
Clowney QB hits per 900 snaps- 21

Its not about being a typical fan. It’s about realizing that sacks and QB hits are typically correlated.

Jacob may be a better Pass rusher overall.

Martin is really bad against the run though. He is just a passing down specialist.

    Maybe so,

But if he makes up for Clowney’s pass rush then that would make the trade much less lopsided.

The Texans defense is full of run stoppers.

False. The Texans are going to miss Clowney’s run D. One of the best in the league.

Absolutely they will, but if he can replicate some pass rush, then it hurts much less.

You’ll never be able to convince anyone with a specific narrative to see that there might be a positive in a negative situation.

They played Martin primarily on passing downs which is why he got more sacks per snap.

He is a good rusher though.

Let's see, we draft a once in a generation talent and pay to get rid of him. We could have had mack and gotten 2 1st round picks for.him. Instead we give 2 1st and a second for an average left tackle
That is what it boils down too. Great personnel drafting and trades.

Well, he's not an elite pass rusher. He's OK, but his strength is as a run stopper.

I know he once had that potential but is he still considered a once in a generation talent? While I did like him I don't think I ever had that thought when watiching him as a Texan.

He hasn’t been properly used and has played out of position. So let’s see how he does this year. He is a once in a generation talent.... but there is more to it than just physical tools and size.

The Texans defense was very beatable even with Clowney and Watt. Paying an exorbitant amount of money to Clowney would have been a mistake.

The joke of a return, the wasted cap space and the million other incompetent choices by this franchise are a different story, but trading him was the smart play. This franchise has too many holes to tie up that much money in 2 defensive players that don't seem to elevate each others performance.
