Audio is pretty inaudible. IMO, he could be talking about actual monkeys. But it's indicative of today's political environment that everybody wants to interpret it as that. In any case, Reagan was pretty squarely traditional Republican. He was not alt-right.
I post here instead of Reddit so that nobody will ask me to watch their white supremacist pepe crap. You'd think a board dedicated to the blackest of sports would be insulated.
I'd have to think about it, but I'm really loathe to classify people; esp. when so many people on this forum see the term as an epithet. You see a few posters that are clearly of a conservative mindset, but are they alt-right? Hard for me to say. Moreover, you get into definitions of what alt-right means. To me, at least originally, it was people who are conservative, but were not traditional conservatives -- ie, business leaders or evangelicals. They might do things such as consume "party favors." So, there is/was some overlap with libertarianism. But of course this subforum is overwhelmingly left, and much of that is extreme left. So, I would say that in general there's probably not too many alt righters on this forum.
It's interesting that you admit this. If I would have made this observation, the leftists on the board would have gone to the "R" word, and pilloried me with multiple, frothing-at-the-mouth posts. Also, it's racist to discriminate against Pepe.
Do you view it as an epithet? What do you call people who hold views that are propagated by white racists?
I don't agree with either description. But many on this board do (with their pretzel logic), and don't want to bring down calumny on other posters with a description that might not be accurate for them. I'm a gentleman like that. With regard to "white racists" -- do you view any white (whatever that means; can a Russian or a Pole join?) person who wants celebrate and preserve their heritage and traditions as racist?
But apparently I have to watch a black female James Bond; otherwise I'm racist or un-enlightened, or something....
You don't have to watch ****. I have no desire to see a black female James Bond, just like I had zero interest in seeing the last Ghost Busters........ and no one is labeling me racist for holding that opinion. What is pathetic is when people whine about it.
Not at all. Issues stem from policies enforced to disparage the heritage and traditions of people that aren't white or wish to assimilate their existing culture and traditions with the melting pot that is supposed to represent all of America.
Talking about actual monkeys................... How difficult is it to be so obtuse? THERE ARE MORE REPUBLICANS THAT ARE RACISTS THAN INDEPENDENTS AND DEMOCRATS. That is the party where white racist Americans go to. It is not that complicated. Accept it for truth. There are black people that are racist also. Yeah we all know. “Last night, I tell you, to watch that thing on television as I did,” Reagan said. “Yeah,” Nixon interjected. Reagan forged ahead with his complaint: “To see those, those monkeys from those African countries—damn them, they’re still uncomfortable wearing shoes!” Nixon gave a huge laugh.
This may be in fact what was being said. Republicans (but not only them) may have some prejudicial sentiments, held closely to the vest. We could get into a debate about whether "racism" was/is our number one problem; I don't think it is. I still maintain that the audio was not great on that clip you provided. Maybe other versions were better. But, I'll concede: there's not much defending the convo in that clip.
Heh. I like a lot of your posts, Nook, but I think you often fail to see the bigger picture. The complaints about Bond, or Star Wars, or the MCU going SJW/PC aren't just a complaint about "movies" -- it's all part of the larger culture war -- which, I would add, in terms of Hollywood, is being won by the left.
I don't necessarily, but then I tend to think of it in its original meaning, which I described above. Now, a lot of alt righters do think in terms of race. A lot of them do want an "ethno-state", or at least a racially/culturally homogeneous community in which they can live. I'd ask you to think about this: if a bunch of alt-righters want to go form their ethno community in, let's say Wyoming or Idaho or the Dakotas (pick any under populated state) or even northern Alberta -- some place where it was just "them", away from other ethnic groups -- is this so bad? They would be removing themselves from the "diverse urban" culture, not causing any problems, just living the way they want to. There is a lot of talk about just this very thing, in a lot of new conservative/alt-right circles. This may be, according to some, "racist," but if they go away and don't bother anyone -- how is this a problem?
