Ponds looks like a steal for what his role would be for the Rockets: 3rd string PG behind Harden and Paul, potential Gordon replacement, and an offensive spark off the bench. The Harden and Ponds combo will be very interesting dynamic. This signing makes a potential trade of Gordon + filler for Butler easier to stomach.
Tough to be too optimistic about someone undrafted, but after doing some videos I think he can make the team and contribute. I think he is the best rookie guard prospect we have had in awhile.
After the draft I hoped we could get Ponds as unsigned free agent.... Nah, I never heard of him. But he seems to be good at breaking down the defense off the dribble and plays with a faster pace than our current primary ball handler. He looks like a wizard around the rim, an elite finisher. I think that consistent layup making is a big need for the Rockets. Also a guy who can put the pressure on the defense and get buckets at will. Also, I like his energy and intensity.
He's 5'11 1/2 without shoes so he's around CP3's height. That's small but not midget sized like Isiah Thomas.
Russell's making the max this dude went undrafted. A beggar version of Russell would be perfect as a 3rd string pg.
Here’s a clip of him scrimmaging with NBA talent. Looks super confident shooting and finishing (as much as a highlight reel can truly reveal...). Not a lot of passing! https://www.instagram.com/tv/B0cJ8wyH_30/?igshid=1y2bwuk5u5jtd
Ponds needs to do a lot better on the Vipers than in the summer league. I would also like to see Deng Adel and Chris Clemons on the Vipers, along with Clark and Hart.
