Same as it ever was. He knows he's not still at the Chronicle, right? The baseball equivalent of Feigen when he covered the Astros.

Meh, it turned out all right here.

I think they'd still like 1 more SP for the playoffs, no? If he's under team control beyond this year, great.

I think we lose Cole, but we get McCullers back. Keep the window open.

I suspect they would love to acquire both a controllable starter as well as a reliever (probably left handed), but the poster I was responding to was ignoring the two relievers they essentially added over the last month.

You can theoretically add in Urquidy and Armenteros as well. That would bring our staff to 10 decent pitchers. Still need 2 more.

Ignoring is a bit strong. It's more like skepticism that Urquidy, McHugh, Armenteros and Smith can be consistent playoff contributors.

    Keone Kela

He is an ******* but he checks a lot of boxes the Astros like: cheap, talented, under team control beyond this year, track record of success, really good stuff and will cost very little in trade.

Kela and Osuna could take sensitivity training together.

I would trade Fisher or Kemp for him.

He probably could be had for a lower level guy like Javier.

Yes the Pirates want him gone. We could get him for very little. He is a risk in the clubhouse but we could always cut him

An arm like this is definitely worth the risk.

Guy's really talented and I would like to see Strom work with him.

How much to get Archer, too?

I honestly don’t know. The Pirates GM has taken a lot of criticism for the players he gave up to get Archer, so he may not be motivated to trade him... instead hoping Archer improves and justifies the trade.

I'd add if the Astros work their magic on a third former Pirates pitcher, he probably gets fired.

Don’t think I’m in on Kela. If Pirates are willing to give him away that’s a sign of how cancerous his attitude is. If they want top prospects then he’s not worth it.

I prefer the risks Houston takes to be related to injury or untapped potential, not attitude. Osuna had serious baggage, but all indications were that he was a good teammate and not a clubhouse negative. Kela doesn’t fit that description.

If Houston wants to add a flawed reliever, here’s a list:

    Jace Fry
    Mychal Givens
    Aaron Bummer
    Joe Jimenez
    Shane Greene
    Jake Diekman
    Ian Kennedy
    Scott Barlow
    Ty Buttrey
    Chris Martin
    Nick Anderson
    David Hernandez
    Amir Garrett
    Michael Feliz
    Jake McGee
    Bryan Shaw

Most of those guys are controlled beyond this season and some even have options remaining.

Alternatively, Houston could hunt bigger game (Yates, Diaz, Oberg, Iglesias, Lugo, Vazquez, LeClerc).

Ken Rosenthal recently reported that there's some skepticism that the Astros have the talent pool to acquire a top-end starting pitcher. I know the Corbin Martin injury & Forrest Whitley slow start have knocked them down, but isn't their farm system deep enough to absorb those blows and still be able to acquire a top-end starting pitcher?

Well Whitley probably isn't available even with the slow start. You are selling pretty low on Corbin Martin. Yordan Alvarez is off the table. Kyle Tucker has been fine and we think he'll be good, so there's one piece. Then it's all potential 5's on the 2-8 scale, or no projected 3 WAR types. There's some depth, but I can see the point that there aren't a bunch of top 100 types that could headline any deal. Lots of teams have that issue, though.
