What up guys. Any tips or references on building a resume for work?

I probably won’t have much to offer regardless, but what do you mean? Are you asking for tips on how to write your resume or how to build work experience for a job? If you’re just trying to write one, I’d recommend looking at a bunch of samples online with similar job positions and borrow language that you like. There are sights that have lists of verbs to use for specific jobs.

I know there was a poster here a few years ago that would create resumes for a certain price.

Yeah that’s the one. People posted positive feedback when it was brought up. Not sure what he charges.

 

With many employers now searching social media sites on the potential employees, I suggest having one in public view that shows a favorable side of you.

On the flip side, if your social media page has drama, opinionated rants or other unfavorable content, lock it down.

i think the deans at UH helped me with mine when I went there years ago. Maybe you can try asking around your campus if you still have relations there.

Otherwise, it also depends on what industry you're going for. I think a resume in advertising is different than other typical fields.

 

Yeah I think most universities that offer career services offer it for alumni. UH has a program where if you’re more than 6 months past graduation, you pay $50 for 6 months access to career services which includes advisors that will work with you on your resume. Worth looking into if you’re a college graduate.

Also if there’s recruiters in the field you’re looking at, they’ll help you with your resume for free since they get paid by the hiring company.

 

I have been seeing articles that suggest ways to improve your odds with automated resume screening... suggestions like don't use columns, don't use lines or special characters, use a single font, etc. Appears these are things that gets your resume rejected by the computer programs they use to evaluate the resumes. Also write the resume for the specific job you are applying for, making sure to load on on key words from the job description.

Do you mind if I ask what you sort of job you're applying for and what your experience is?

I've reviewed a fair number of resumes, and I can tell in the interview pretty quickly how much the person is bullshitting me with their resume. But it's hard to just say "be honest" without some context for how to do so effectively.

I will say that for the people I interview, usually engineers but really all jobs in a small business, I am absolutely looking for scenarios where you taught yourself something. That shows initiative, dedication, independence, drive, a hunger to always to do better, dissatisfaction with being static and pigeonholed, etc. Whether you're just out of school or you've been in industry for 50 years and regardless of the position, I'll look for and ask about that.
