east side! cherrywood area rentals... manor rd. area rentals... all cheap. residents are either adults, quietish hipsters, or artists. best place to live (not as criminal as people paint it out to be.) stay away from west campus and riverside, far west is ok (but far), north campus is nice but is getting expensive.
Lived off South Congress for a couple of years while in business school and had a blast. There's Doc's, Freebird's, Homeslice, and Guero's all right there in walking distance.
You might want to check out the thread I started last week about different areas to live in Austin. I'm looking for a house to rent, but you may be able to get some ideas. - http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=207139 Just so you know, finding a place to rent right now in Austin is ridiculous. I still haven't found a place. I talked to a realtor out there and she said the rental market is more active now than she's seen it in the 30 years she's lived there. Many houses in good areas are off the market within a day or two of being listed. The areas I really like are Hyde Park and S Congress. Good luck.
Unfortunately you're probably not going to get affordable, convenient, and decent housing all at the same time. My information is ten years old but it seems to have gotten more crowded since, if anything. West Campus was pretty much unaffordable; even the Far West shuttle route was difficult to afford. Prepare for roommates and a lot of sharing stuff in most places. Manor Rd. was scary then but it sounds like it has improved since. Riverside was already bad, and looked worse last time I was down there, but (at least used to) if you went up the hill back behind Riverside, to some of the quieter neighborhoods that were still on UT shuttle routes, the prices were OK, though not super cheap, and it was no longer scary. I lived back there my first year at UT. Also lived on North Lamar for a while because I felt like living by myself and driving or taking a city bus rather than the high priced, poorly maintained apartments on the UT shuttle routes. But I wouldn't recommend that anymore; the neighborhood has gotten more, ummm, interesting. Some people liked living in Hyde Park or Enfield but I was never able to find any good deals there; maybe I didn't know where to look.
E. Riverside is still bad but improving. They're tearing down a few of the older, more frightening complexes and rebuilding them with new places...though I'm sure much more expensive, too.

This is a stupid bump, but hey, everyone can now sleep on the sidewalk!! I honestly hope no one gets hurt, the sidewalks might not be the best spot even if you could sort of do it before. I am also not talking about anyone who's homeless but with the non-homeless crazies/drunk drivers etc. It'd be a lot cooler if there were better/safer options if people were homeless. PS I don't goto d&d, so sorry in advance if caring about people is a touchy topic
This is nothing new. There's been drag rats and homeless camping in the greenbelt for as long as I've been around Austin, 25 years or so. But you are absolutely correct, it would be a lot cooler if there were better options.
Having just been in LA (but live in austin) where there are people living in tents on the side of the road in a lot of places... I’d happily have some of my tax money (or even a smidge more paying) go to programs to shelter the homeless. Tent city is just not nice in any way imo
Yes, Def true, I think I've been in Austin for roughly 25 years now too and def agree on nothing new, it'll be interesting on how much different things change but you're probably right, it'll be like the drag/green belt but maybe more spots now? On a side note, I think camping in this weather is tough too. Just can be pretty wild w/ the temp swings
Yeah, if I knew the money was used correctly or it was just tax etc, I'd def sign up for that for sure. Especially if it meant people had good access to A/C or heat (especially on those random actually cold nights we have).
My older daughter just got a job with the state (DPS, Disaster Planning). We found that the north area of Austin near The Domain was a bit nicer and safer so she found something off of West Parmer between 45 and 1. A number of nice apartment complexes. About 25 minutes to the University.
ive been in austin for 24 years and i feel like while there has always been a lot of homeless here, its gotten to a different level over the last couple years. more of them and much more aggressive. the ben white area has become a homeless city made out of literal garbage. seeing tents set up on sidewalks or under highways is definitely a new thing and it makes the city look like s*** and encourages s***ty people to come here. there have been homeless people who live in the woods around my neighborhood for years and i dont feel like they have ever been a problem. ive seen the same ones daily for over a decade. i live a mile or so south of ben white and when the city comes and clears out those camps they all come into my area. super sketchy people. they hang out all day and night at the bus stop in front of my neighborhood getting drunk or high and passing out. super aggressive panhandling. they cut through my neighborhood or wander around breaking into cars and stealing stuff. had one passed out in my neighbors yard in broad daylight. i was walking my dog late one night and a dude was going around opening up mailboxes and looking for stuff in there. he started following me when i asked what he was doing. i had a buck knife on me and pulled it out and held it at my side at which point he went the other way, but if i didnt do that i think he was going to try something with me. again, we have always had a large homeless population, but over the last couple years its gotten to a much bigger, trashier, scarier level. its definitely different than it used to be. its getting to san franscisco-type levels pretty quickly.
