Now that the Butler farce is over, the Rockets can finally focus on realistic targets to improve an already really good team.

Who can/should the Rockets pick up with the rest of thier non tax payer MLE (5.7million) to improve their squad. Or will they punt again on using it as they did last year? Yah yah, Morey would argue they eventually used some of it (last year) for minimum contracts.

Edit: thanks @treyk3 for pointing out that rockets used part of the MLE on House, leaving them approximately 5.7 million of it to spend. Spending 3+ million for only House doesn't count as using the full MLE imo.

I sure hope so. we need to add another rotation player who's better than the minimum.

We only have around 2.5 mill left.

That’s barely more than a vet min, we’d be super lucky to get Rivers with it.

There’s a good chance we loose out on Rivers and have to replace him with an inferior player. Meaning it’s very likely possible we send out a worse squad than last year.

UPDATE (w/House deal): If the Rockets do NOT land Butler, they could still use the remainder of the NT-MLE ($5.734M) & BAE ($3.623M) to add key pieces to their existing core and stay just under a hard cap. However, they would be limited in their ability to add salary via trades. https://t.co/bTuVczk3ON
— David Weiner (@BimaThug) July 1, 2019

Bring back the Manimal or signing McGee won’t be a terrible idea if the deal is minimum to low.

    @blahblehblah

That’s if we decide to hardcap and go through with a NT MLE, we could do that, but I don’t understand why we just wouldn’t have gave House the BAE instead so we could have used a full 4/40 on a big FA.

I feel like it’s more likely we just use the tax payer MLE, and re-sign Shump to a large contract as a trade filler for later in the season. Meaning we would have no BAE and only around 2.5 - 2.8 mill left of the MLE

Depends on who they can get with the remainder of the MLE. If someone like Danny Green is willing to take $5.7 million, then sure, they will use it. Or if Looney or Willie Cauley-Stein will take it and the Rockets can work out a deal with Boston to get Jaylen Brown for Capela, they would use it.

Otherwise, they would probably keep it for the in-season buyout market.

Yeah, I'm just assuming they used the NT MLE, otherwise this years free agency haul will be a lot like last year. "We'll have our picks of free agents! *minimum level free agents*

The reason they didnt use the BAE is probably because House pushing for a 3 year, BAE can only be two years. 4/40 or 3/33 or even less would've definitely been able to get someone good, say a Reddick, Hood, Thad Young, D Rose, Aminu... etc.

Yes. They need to. Nene is gone, Faried almost certainly is and Rivers is unsigned. There's also that obvious hole at starting SF (love Gordon, but the guy should be a 6th man).

If all Morey does this offseason is stay pat, but he loses Nene, Rivers and Faried, he will have failed miserably. The roster needs to improve and until he's accomplished that, he should be using every resource at his disposal.

actually the "paycut" got turned into bonuses, so really they still have the opportunity to make what the public believes is an actual paycut

I think tilman will shut it down.

I don’t think he’ll go into the tax for anything less than a star
