It's that hope that was delusional in the first place. CP3 is an old player who has already earned multiple max contracts and saw the Rockets as a chance to define his legacy with a championship. Butler can GO TO ANY CONTENDER for a max via SnT or outright signing. They are two totally different circumstances. It is literally apples to oranges.

Where have you heard opt-in at any point in time? From fans of the team going "Gee golly, I hope Butler forgoes millions of dollars while risking injury without security and if he doesn't it clearly means he prioritizes money over winning!" That's a trash argument and delusional "hope". Not trying to mean here, just realistic instead of naive.

Also, CP3 was 32 years old so I don't know why you mention that as if it supports your argument. He was 32 years old meaning he has made a TON more money and is looking to define his legacy at this point in his career.

How would he be playing us? He has multiple teams ready to give him the max one way or another; Rockets via SnT, Lakers via FA signing, Clippers via FA signing, Brooklyn via FA signing, and any mediocre team with cap room. If he goes to the Rockets it will be purely because he WANTED to go to the Rockets. He doesn't need the Rockets for leverage. He already has leverage simply by being a highly desired FA star.

 

It was reported earlier today that he may be prioritizing the 5th year and then I saw some things saying that Philly may not be offering the full 5 year like we’ve assumed
