Kind of a meh night. Booker got too much airtime and Gabbard looked overwhelmed, so that's a bummer. Castro and Klob were the winners in the overnights, so that's a wash. Warren held serve. Oh well. That was the appetizer. Tonight is the main course.
I think you are right here. Even if we all argue around the edges of how to get there, Bernies goals are the goals of the mainstream Dem party now, and Biden will plummet if he gets on the mainstage & fails to align with the mainstream. You don't have to be for abolishing private insurance, or repealing the law that makes crossing the border illegal, but you better have some damn good responses on those key issues of healthcare as a right especially, womens rights, immigration, etc. I would say Biden 4 years ago would be able to handle this & win over the mainstream, but lately he's looked like an old timer naive about how things have changed. If he wants to win, I think he's gotta have a wake up call moment. I actually wouldn't think automatically it would be Bernie or Liz Warren who would have the initial support of the Biden crowd too. I think you'll see Kamala get the Biden support if he plummets. Kamala sometimes has struggled with question preparedness, but she seems well aligned to be within the mainstream 2019 Dem values, but isn't necessarily married to Bernie idealism as if Congress, Mitch McConnell, and a right wing SCOTUS does not exist. Short answer... we'll see, but I totally get the sentiment about Biden. I have my concerns about him aligning to the mainstream that Bernie deserves credit for shifting the expectations of our shared ambitions.
I'm biased because I predicted Booker would be a future president about six years ago, but I digress, I thought he did well last night.
Why single out the Democratic Party? How this get any traction at this point of time is a mystery to me.
one reason is that if the Democrats are to have any hope of attracting independents and crossover voters, this is one of the areas where some Democratic candidates could gain traction. The clear winner among some Republican-leaning sources was Delaney, and Klobuchar fared well with these folks as well. The war between Buttigieg and Harris over the lion's share of the Biden refugees is going to be vicious.
Independents/crossover voters and Republican Leaners (i.e. Kasich voters) are two entirely different groups. You're not going to win over Republican leaners. So to hell with that noise.
This would actually sting if the Republicans weren't already proven to give no f***s about the deficit or budget. If the American people have to choose between a drunken sailor who wants to buy a bunch of guns, hookers, and booze or a drunken sailor who wants buy a bunch of food, medicine, and books , they'll probably take drunken sailor #2.
Fiscal responsibility is a luxury concern most Americans can't afford anymore. The desperate don't give a f*** about the deficit or the budget. They want help. You can figure out the numbers later.
It's something you have to deal with. Your interest payments become larger and larger every year. Just servicing the debt is projected to cost a trillion dollars a year by 2028. It currently costs $400 billion a year.
"Never Trumpers" and "Republican Leaners" aren't necessarily the same thing, either. The data is clear. Your average D or R leaner doesn't cross party lines. They simply stay home if their party's candidate is too off-putting.
If you can't feed yourself, afford your medicine, or pay the mortgage, literally nothing else matters.
Because, of course, they voters prefer someone that lies to them over someone who will be honest and spend on people in need... and here we are with trump.
Your government won't be able to provide any services at all if crumbles under the weight of its debt.
What do I care about government collapse if I'm starving or homeless? Hell, anarchy becomes a downright appealing option if I'm living in poverty.
