Dude, wasn't trying to upset anyone. I actually think the right thing was done here, and I support euthanasia laws, when carefully crafted. I liked the one in Oregon, for example.

Anyway, I had not studied the specifics of force-feeding, etc, before posting earlier.

But yes, interesting historical tidbit: the Nazis moved from what looked like sensible euthanasia laws (people brain dead or in incredible pain) to expanding who needed to die out of "mercy," first to people with mental illnesses and then off to the races (so to speak, worst pun ever). I'm not at all saying the Netherlands (or Oregon) are like Nazis. Not even close. But it's just an interesting bit of history to keep in mind. Laws are only as sensible as the government we eventually elect to enforce them. (And the damned Nazis were basically elected, sad to say.)

As an aside, I wish people / society / gov realize this more and take it into account. And I also wish that people realize the brain is never "hard-coded" and is always malleable. The sky is the limit for life. Then you look at the POTUS... n/m.

Lol I’m not upset I just don’t think it’s comparable. But at least we got that pun out of it haha

To the bold, words on paper and who is enforcing them is a really crazy theory if one steps back and looks at it with no bias. And then with the biases lol like, it’s crazy. The mentality people have specifically in America towards governing and the way we seem to participate (loose term there) is bonkers, cuckoo-bananas, bat sht crazy.

Perhaps it's a result of your posting history. When you post an endless amount of crap, you no longer get the benefit of the doubt when you try to have an honest discussion. Instead of blaming everyone else, maybe look inwards at your own decision making.

She was not euthanized. She requested it, But was refused.

I mean if it's unbearable pain, then 3 years sounds excruciating.

I have never really understood the demand (and the vitriol that often accompanies the demand) for Os T to weigh in with his personal view on the articles he posts. Sure, I am sometimes curious, but I appreciate his posts and the information he provides whether I agree/disagree (or am not well-informed enough on a particular subject to have a real view) with the material he posts. Just glad to see different viewpoints.

My guess is that if he did the same thing but posted articles that aligned with your views (and others), there would be a lot more tolerance for it.

I guess "crap" is in the eye of the beholder, but the personal attacks reflect poorly on the ones engaging in them.

People don't like those who troll - and Os has done a lot of that.

Ann Althouse weighs in on this difficult issue:
    _______

"Noa Pothoven, 17, has been legally euthanized in the Netherlands, saying the pain she was dealing with after a childhood rape was 'insufferable.'"

The teen wrote an autobiography called 'Winning or Learning,' which details her battles with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anorexia after being molested and raped as a young child.... Pothoven asked her friends and followers on Instagram to 'not convince me that this is not good, this is my decision and it is final.' Children as young as 12 can opt for euthanasia in the Netherlands, but only after a doctor determines that the patient’s pain is unbearable" NY Post.

    Unbearable.

I disagree with this characterization. OS's posts are arguably the most interesting, thoughtful and incisive stuff posted here, and certainly do not warrant the venom that is often displayed here.

It is very very easy to underestimate the level of physical or mental pain some people endure largely because the vast majority of us have not experienced anything comparable.

I have a close friend that was diagnosed with a brain tumor 3-4 months ago. She first had difficulty driving at night because of her vision... then she lost vision in one eye... then headaches... then dizzy spells... then passing out... then couldn’t walk, then couldn’t control her bowels ... her eyes won’t focus now... and she can no longer swallow or eat... so now she has a feeding tube.

She is terrified to die - but terrified to live like she is.

If she decided tomorrow she wanted to kill herself (she can’t, too weak) I don’t think anyone that knew her would blame her. She should have access to euthanization. She has a tumor growing in her head pushing her eyes out and putting pressure on her skull and can no longer produce tears.

So the choices are refusing her a feeding tube so she starves to death (mind you she can still think and talk) or let a brain tumor bash her brains about in her skull.

Sometimes it is mercy to grant someone’s wish of death. Sometimes things never get better.

I agree - but he also posts a lot of pure propaganda nonsense and then defends it with "I don't agree, I'm just posting it for discussion!" nonsense while avoiding contributing any discussion.

edit: as I go back and look through, while he does some of that, it's not as much as I thought. I think I got him and Coheto mixed up at times. So apologies for that.

I can't speak for others, but not for me. I think the value of a discussion board is the discussion with actual people with actual viewpoints - there are endless other places to find article accumulators. That said, none of the people here on the left really do much of that, so there's no real data to defend either of our thoughts on that. (That's not because the left is any better - it's just random small sample size)

I really don't have appropriate words for this, but I'm sorry for your friend's pain and yours.

Easy way to keep them separate is to remember that Coheto is the white nationalist with totalitarian sympathies,
