Which is why, IMO, it makes sense that they'd wait until at least Altuve and Diaz are back. This way Gurriel can stay at 1B and White can be...gone. I don't think Reddick gets traded during this season but it's hard to imagine him on the roster after this season. There's no way they're keeping him to platoon at 1B.
Reddick’s value next season wouldn’t be limited to a 1B platoon, even if that’s how he ended up being deployed. He also serves as insurance: if Tucker, Alvarez, or Brantley struggle or get hurt, he’s still an everyday caliber corner outfielder who bats lefty. Yes, it’s a luxury to have everyday caliber guys in bench roles, but that holds more value than they could likely get for Reddick via trade.
What’s missing in all this are reliable luxury tax totals for this year and next, and how that factors into whether the team can afford extensions AND contracts like Reddick’s and any future starter acquisitions. I mean, at this point, from a luxury tax point of view, would you rather have Reddick or a #3 like Morton?
That’s not the choice. If they had the option of trading Reddick for a Morton, they’d have already done it. At this point they’d be lucky to trade half of Reddick’s salary. So it’s more like trading Reddick for another Wade Miley (which may also be worthwhile).
I’m no professional talent evaluator but I think Yordan Alvarez might be the best hitter in the history of baseball.

With Fisher and Straw showing out in the majors right now, and what Tucker and Alvarez are doing in AAA, Houston has some serious trade chips to use to go get a star pitcher for the rotation.
Cleveland seems like a really good trade partner there. They need young and cheap OF. They have star level pitching under club control. Get it done!
