We can't just sign Butler, though.

They can't sign Butler, they can only trade for him, but to make that happen the Rockets need Butler and the Sixers to be ok with it.

    Hell no.

Trade CP3, but not for useless bit-part toilers. Those are the guys you trade to GET a CP3, not the ones you trade a CP3 to get.

You have to convince Butler to opt in to the last year of his contract, and Philly has to like a deal centered around Gordon and future draft picks. It was always asking a lot.

After this news, there will be a burst of national attention on Rocket's assets and maybe even increased traffic to this forum. Let's not disparage our guys too much. ;)

Eh, maybe so, but I'm just really doubtful of this core and improving the role players this offseason. Best case with CP3 is he doesn't show up fat again.

If Butler is convinced of joining the Rockets - which automatically means he's decided to leave - as you describe here, then no Philly doesn't have to like a deal. They just have to like it more than him walking for nothing.

That gets complicated too though because Philly isn't over the cap. Him walking is a loss of assets, but it's not the disaster that it would normally be with other teams. They are about $60m under the cap without Harris, Butler and Reddick. If Butler walks, they re-sign Harris and they renounce Reddick, they are close to having another max cap slot. Waiving J Simmons (who is partially guaranteed) could get them there.

So the question for them becomes: can they do better with their cap space than Eric Gordon on a 1 year $14m deal and a first rounder or two?

My prediction is that if we are lucky enough for it to get to the point where Butler has told them he's walking, they are unlikely to get a top tier FA and could very well prefer to let Reddick walk, re-sign Harris, trade Butler and get Gordon + picks + still $14m of cap space still remaining.

No teams is dumb enough to trade for a declining 34 year old point guard getting paid 40 million a season.

    We're stuck with him.

With all the news and rumors coming out this week, I think we can safely say the Butler deal is dead...no way we remodel to this extent if Butler was coming

True , but we can get reliable vets with the money it would open up . Development is always a risk and is kinda just gravy on top at this point .

All of the lakers young guys at the very least show signs of being OK spot up shooters . They'd get playing time

Lmao is there a quote from Morey somewhere that I’m missing? The Rockets being active is hardly newsworthy.
