Stopped reading after "AOC is driving the agenda of the Democratic party." I don't really agree with the basic premise that the article is built on.

I don't think AOC is "economic illiterate", I think she knows exactly what she is doing. I do not agree with her economic policy anymore than I agree with the policy that there should be no regulations or safeguards. I certainly would not vote for her for any executive office.

She isn't ignorant, she is quite bright. The problem is that her position on many economic issues is dangerous. Underestimating her intelligence would be a mistake. She is quite adept, she just holds a political position that I strongly disagree with.

Time will tell. Most of life is gray and not black and white.

Exactly that's why this whole thread really shouldn't exist. But then again look who started it - a MAGA troll, for whom there is only black and white (spoiler alert, they want white to win)

Determining the true cost/benefit of cities racing to the bottom as part of the great corporate welfare scam s not a simple equation in any event. I tend think that when you net out all the losers and the winners, the losers are mostly us, the lions share of the win is taken by...guess who, not us.

What this data point strongly weighs in favor of is the argument that destination cities/tech hubs like NYC, SF, etc are exceedingly foolish to play into the corporate welfare game - they're destination cities for a reason.

If Amazon decides it won't go there without free money, there is usually somebody willing to go there in its place, and in this case, the somebody was....Amazon.

I'm sure she is book smart. I have literally no respect for her. Same with Trump. Assholes and liars

I don't think she is limited to being book smart, she is very savvy. I don't agree with her political positions on economic issues and yes.... she knows exactly what she is saying and doing for effect. The President is similar. It is easy to paint them as stupid..... but they both are actually crazy like a fox.

No, Trump is actually stupid. I understand what you mean as in Trump is adept at "reading a room" and pandering but I think that skill requires more being shameless than being actually intelligent.

And comparing the two is silly. Trump has been a career grifter who never desires the time to understand nuanced policy. He doesn't care about his constituents and purposefully tries to divide the nation.

AOC has genuine intent. You disagree with her ideologically which is perfectly fine but beyond that let's not try to compare the two as some sort of equal career scam artist grifters.

I don't understand how looking for 100,000 square feet (which might grow to more) sheds any light on chasing away 4 to 8 million square feet.

The best type of education is the school of hard knocks...

Please don't tell me you believe in the tired old discredited paradigm of "street smart" vs "book smart".

The 4 million that is not built yet and would not be built for nearly a decade, if it were ever built..?

It is there where it has always been..in the ether.

Meanwhile the actual physical space is being used today but will be sold to some developer who will..

...develop buildings. If climate change doesn't make the area unbuildable (it might be already, but that's another matter - my kids old daycare in lic was inoperable for months after Sandy)

It's amazing how capitalism works isn't it? Strangely it works both ways.

    It’s all climate change’s fault.

That makes sense. For a second, I thought you had equated 100,000 == 8,00,000.

100,000 == “climate change” makes much more sense.

I don't understand what just dropped out of your slovenly maw, but I emphasize with you brother.

Google started with 1 worker and 0 sf in Manhattan in 2000

Today it has 3 million sf and is expanding to 15,000. NYC is its "hq2"

Amount of dumb Amazon like giveaways it sought:

    0

Amount of times it was referred to as "HQGoo"

    0

I don't think Google is all good, nor has its expansion in Manhattan been all good, but it shows the lie here...as does Anazon coming crawling back.

On the other hand if you still think this kind of corporate welfare is a good idea, I encourage you all to become "donor partners" in my new yet unnamed app - it's the uber of blood plasma donation!

Are you here to say that after a major hurricane, a daycare facility was inoperable? That's it, climate change is indisputable now! This is incontrovertible evidence!

Does it surprise anyone that the same lunatic fringe liberals who believe in climate change fantasies also fell for 2 years worth of Russian collusion fantasies? Emotion has taken over their brains!

    GOOD DAY

Trump can do more than read a room. He is able to politically anticipate 2-3 steps ahead of most politicians and is a master manipulator. He isn’t stupid. He says and does things with purpose.

AOC is quite bright and is an idealogue. She does however say sensational and controversial things or purpose and presents topics in black and white and absolutes. She knows very well what she is doing and has a good idea of the response she will get. She is a self promoter as well. She is a very charismatic and skilled politician. She (like Trump) knows people (mostly men) underestimate her.

AOC is likely a good person. Donald Trump is a terrible person and monster. However politically, their skill sets are very similar.

I genuinely believe you are overstating Trump's intelligence by a wide margin. Any success he has can be attributed a network of right wing media from Fox News to hundreds of YouTube channels that will convince a large contingent of people that the sky is green as long as Trump does what any idiot rubber stamper can do and that is pack judges and sign tax cuts. Those media outlets do a infinitly better job at convincing Trump supporters that he's their man than Trump himself.

Trump doesn't think steps ahead. That isn't how he operates. He is the most id president we have ever had by a wide margin.

Again, it's your perception that she overstates. Their political style is sharply different. While AOC can get emotional, she also delves in policy.

AOC may have what she believes to be good intentions, but she is off the charts ignorant and lacks the real world experience to understand which policies work and which do not. Most of the rabid pro-abortion voices that you'll hear are either men/women without children or young people who have never seen an ultrasound. In that specific circumstance, they lack the real world experience of raising children, and as such, have very limited perspective on the abortion decision. The same is true of taxes. AOC's net worth is tiny -- I've even heard she has significant credit card debt and a low credit score. So why then, should she be entrusted with making financial decisions on how to allocate tax dollars? Again, she lacks the real world experience -- and in addition, she lacks the executive leadership experience to make these decisions. President Trump, love him or hate him, has a huge amount of real world experience, and this experience has helped him tremendously in managing economic and foreign policy. Both of which are going quite well, by any objective measure.

AOC makes decisions based on emotions and not logic or experience, and in that way, is a perfect representation of the naive, idealistic youth vote.

    GOOD DAY

I don't understand why a city like NYC - which has a distressed infrastructure already stretched beyond its capacity, should engage in corporate welfare to add more load to its system without expanding tax revenue to cover that load and cover the costs of the incentives. That's because most of the tax revenue goes to the state of NY and the state doesn't parcel all that money back to the city.
