On this memorial day I think we should have a healthy conversation between the difference of nationalism and patriotism.

Patriotism has a introspective element to it while nationalism is deviod of any sort of introspection.

Do you think that is the main differentiatior between these two ideologies?

I believe in national sovereignty, personal liberty, and democracy.

The OP is a racist. No matter what kind of discussion you attempt to have with him, he will boil it down to white people denying agency or something about his mother’s hijab.

I believe all those tenants fall under patriotism. Nationalism is believing that one's own nation is superior to all else and that their nation is near infallible. The only criticising of one's own nation involves blaming the "other". For Nazi nationalism it was the Jews and any other non-Aryans. With modern day American nationalism, it's Muslims, Mexicans and inner city black folks.

I think we should remember those who fought and died for this country and forget politics for the day. Enjoy time with our friends and family...now it's time for me to light the pit. Enjoy folks...

Personally I can see myself pledging my allegiance to the flag and the constitution.

I cannot see myself feverishly wishing my tribe or my country killing or oppressing other nations, races......

Patriotism is brought on in pride in a nations accomplishments and/or ideals.

Nationalism is brought on by a perception of lost respect or fundamental change in a nations identity.

I don't think this captures things and what you wrote seems to have come through a more modern, globalist lens.

That is actually rebranding patriotism as globalism. Nationalism, means strongly supporting your country by placing it first, and putting others second, which is patriotic at its core. It has nothing to do with invading others to take over the world. It is merely saying that a country shouldn't be at the whim of another people. Suggesting the nation bend down to support other states before its own citizens is counter to the interests of the people of said country and actually anti-patriotic in many instances. Of course there are nuances to this. A nation can put itself first and participate in the broader world. Making advantageous trade deals is one way to do it. It is no secret that people who benefit from globalism, are globalist and willing to sell out their country if it profits them. Republicans and Democrats are largely corporatists and are both guilty of this and it is not a recent problem.

I think you have a bad idea of what nationalism actually is. Maybe because it has been branded as evil by many who seek to profit off globalism and it is largely equated to white nationalism, which is NOT the same thing. It is also falsely equated to nazi ideology by many who seek to instate a more globalist agenda. Ethno-nationalism is far different from your everyday civic nationalist.

Sorry if I misrepresent your views, but I think you don't get it.

I would like to see how you reached that conclusion, because I think there are many more causes. Such as a survival mechanism. The idea of supporting your own first is an evolutaionary advantage is a simple enough reason to support one's homeland.

Interesting perspective on it. I don't agree though and respectfully will submit that partiotism doesn't have to be introspective. There are blind supporters in both camps. And also there are introspective ones on both sides with complex reasons for thinking their thoughts on the matter and varying views within each as to what it means to them.

I do agree that this is a great topic.

Patriotism is, very simply, a love for one’s country and its ideals. Nationalism is a desire to make one’s country more powerful and dominant relative to other countries (both allies and adversaries), and often builds off of fear or insecurity about one’s position in the world.

Patriotism means different things to different people, because there is disagreement over what is worth loving about one’s country. Patriotism can lead certain types of people to be nationalists. But you certainly don’t have to be a nationalist to be a patriot.

I certainly respect the liberties we’re afforded in this country, and our system of due process is certainly superior to many foreign countries.

However, my blood is (more or less) the same blood that runs though the veins of any other human in this planet. I’m grateful to have been born on this particular soil, however, there is nothing inherent that makes me superior to any other person in another nation. We are all members of this Earth and a citizen of France, Honduras, or Saudi Arabia is my brother/sister just the same.
