Even if true, there are some things a coach should never publicly say about a former player, especially a star. This would be one of them.

Clearly McHale is still bitter and has an agenda.

Harden "isn't a leader" yet he managed to lead Chris Paul to the Rockets:eek:

McHale led Ty Lawson to the Rockets :p

From the standpoint of a Rockets fan, it's easy to call McHale out for his awful coaching. He was every bit as much a basketball coach as Rick Smith is a general manager; i.e. he's just one of those humans that tries to make himself indispensible by virtue of who he knows instead of what he knows. The end result was a nepotistic incompetent bumbling fool that wasted away three years of prime Dwight + Harden. I understand bringing him aboard for that rebuild year where Lin and Parsons were our primary players, but the minute we got Harden and the second that Lillard beat us he should have been out of here.

That being said, his comments come from a place of truth. James Harden if you had to analyze his personality is definitely a brooding, quiet type: a lone wolf (INFP) or a contemplative lumberjack (INFJ). He is great at sublimating, going from criticism to hard work to improvements in his personal game. As a leader though you would hope for a superstar whose personality more naturally fits the role. Look at what happened when we went from our pupu platter of quarterbacks to Deshaun Watson. Linemen start blocking better, and wide receivers start making these circus catches all over the place. Leaders get teammates to elevate their performances, to show up when the stakes are higher, and to expect greatness from themselves. Leadership tends to be an innate, inflexible quality of people, and I do believe that Chris Paul will take on such responsibility that James try as best he may is simply unable to assume. No matter how many books on leadership he's been reading.

In some respects, I agree with McHale. Harden is not the leader in a Kobe or Lebron-esque way, Like McGrady, he makes his teammates better, and leads the team in most statistical columns. However, he isn't the emotional leader that inspires his teammates, he isn't the serious type of leader that was more common in McHale's era of basketball. He may inspire them with some dazzling plays occasionally, but it's the Beverlys and the Chris Pauls that get the "leader" status because of their intensity.

It's funny because many people didn't consider McHale a real coach.

unfortunately fans here would take intensity over effectiveness and results

like choosing WB over Harden for MVP
