I don't know why people want to see harden shoot extra hard shots over good defense so much. Yes, he can make them, but not our best option. He gets way more separation on the step back 3 because the defender has to worry about him getting past them and has to guard way more real estate. His contested floater is better than his contested step back for sure. Also Harden rarely gets single coverage inside the 3pt line and if he does usually tries to get to the rim which is higher percentage of fouls and made field goals. I really thought this thread was going to be about the sweet euro step Harden dusted off in the 4th quarter. I would love to see more of that on his drives.

Contrary to popular belief, a floater is a hard shot. That’s why not too many players in the league even have that shot at their disposal.

In the situations in the video, the defender is too close to harden to get a floater off.

It’s a good wrinkle and adds more versatility to his game and makes him less predictable than just chucking step back 3’s and trying to go straight to the rim.

That's the trump card. Everybody is wrong about Morey that we don't shoot the mid range. In fact, we value it so much. People don't show their trump cards all that often, don't they?

Harden is almost a 90% free throw shooter. This shot is pretty easy for someone with his shooting touch provided he gets separation. This shot should be a staple for him late in the game when buckets are hard to come by.

what you didnt take into account is :

1 midrange isnt as efficient as 3 overall but at the end of the games it doesnt matter ,all you need is scoreboard to keep moving and to avoid other teams fastbreaks and momentum(!)
2 with stepback 3 he's always falling down and if he misses its a long rebound and a 5 on 4 fastbreak
3 on the drives whistles are often silent even if hes fouled and also you have automatic 5 on 4 fastbreak while harden is complaining to the refs or lying on the ground
    4 see 1 above

Yup; floaters are crazy hard to do consistently and accurately. That's why Tony Parker was so crazy good during his peak. He was able to get into the paint but then to execute floaters time and time again.....crazy.

The fact that James Harden has this in his arsenal just speaks volumes on how devastating he is as a scorer.

He doesn’t have to use his legs as much as shooting a step back 3 either, so it’s good in situations where you’re dealing with tired legs late in the game.

This shot is basically a layup. It should be part of the layups and three strategy.

    A mid-range shot is... well, mid-range.
I think anything WIDE OPEN in the paint is not mid-range.

There was a play early in the game in which Harden had a wide open shot from the elbow and he decided to back off to the 3pt. line. He missed that shot and the Rockets didn't score on the possession. If he's got an open look, he should take it regardless of where on the floor he is.

Moreyball is 3's and in the paint... Harden's "mid-range" more often than not is still in the paint, therefore, efficient! lol

He pulled up for this shot in the 4th once. This is the shot he needs to go to in the 4th when his legs are gone. I don't understand why Harden doesn't bust this out. This shot was the shot that made him MVP runner up.

    YES I also noticed this
it caused rockets to lose all the momentum and gave all momentum in the world to the worriers

Obviously, Morey needs to add momentum breakers and momentum makers into his efficiency calculation....

His current formula is seriously deficient

yes HOWEVER notice that the less separation EQUALS a great opportunity for the malevolent ref to call an offensive foul....

Harden is afraid of the refs thats why hes overplaying iso and stepback 3s
