The Capela lob is easy to stop if you have good coaches and the right defenders, which the Warriors do since they are playing no centers for the most part. The Rockets should know better and it's insane that we're still attempting these. Did they not watch tape from previous years? That the Capela lob is actually a bread and butter play for our offense is really weak and is an indictment on the lack of creativity from the coaches. It's great in the regular season when nobody scouts you and most of the teams don't have the personnel to stop it. it would be nice if we ran more non-amateur plays that are actually difficult to stop against the legit defensive teams.
And part of that is on coaching. We really need a rebounding coach because a lot of the missed rebounds are just due to being at the wrong place. We're not a bad defensive rebounding team just because we play small ball. If we actually KNEW how to rebound, box out, position well, we could still be at least average.
I don't see it. If MDA does play him or Clark, what an embarrassing moment it would be for him. We could've played them more and developed them in the regular season where it's actually appropriate. Instead we might have to resort to playing guys that haven't played meaningful minutes in months.
I don't think you're fully understanding the purpose of the lob threat, or how it's used. It's not usually a designed play that has to end with Capela receiving the lob, it's used as an option. If Harden beats his defender at the perimeter and drives in, Capela's defender has two options. He can either step up and contest James at the rim, or he can hang back and defend against the lob. The defender should not be able to defend both of these things at the same time (unless he has an 8 foot wing span like Gobert) and typically has to make the choice. The problem is that Draymond is very smart, and quite simply is outplaying Harden. He fakes like he's stepping up, and then immediately jumps back right as Harden throws the lob. If Harden could read this or predict it correctly, he could take the open layup in these situations, because the rim is unprotected.
Harden just needs to be more aggressive and finish more near the rim. He's going to get a couple of calls and Green could get into foul trouble. Harden shouldn't be scared of getting his shot blocked. As for Capela, he's not playable against the Warriors death lineup -- not just because of his struggles with converting the lob passes, but because he's getting exploited on defense
MDA is damned if you do and damned if you don’t. The bigs on our roster don’t match up, and we don’t have a snake or donkey man on our team, freakish body types and skill sets. That said, Capela is playing soft. Guy is doing nothing when we need him (and after he was all.. we want them after the Utah series).. nice job there, guy. Dunk the ball on one of these fools, and please don’t get blocked by curry again
Yep, I agree, he needs to read the situation better. Fake the lob and then go for the easy layup while donkey jumps back to intercept the pass.
He looks shook. There's no nice way to say it. We need him to wake up. We will be swept if he's a -15 every game.
I’m watching some of this game again and Capela just looking so SLOW. He’s not running the floor like normal. He hesitates with the ball down low instead of just going up strong and fast. He got blocked by curry for goodness sake. He looks extremely soft. We’re going to need capela to actually show up the rest of this series. And the whole team needs to relearn one of the fundamentals of basketball and start boxing out. It’s embarrassing how even GSW bench guys like Jerebko and McKinney are allowed to grab offensive boards and put in super meaningful minutes while guys like house contribute NOTHING and green gets exposed on D.
This...its mostly on harden n the smart play of Draymond. It is a counter there that I hope they see. I suggest not looking for the lob at the rim....but the lob over the top after Clint seals dray when he fakes at harden. Simple throw it over the top Clint catch it n with Draymond sealed n out of position a easy dunk
Or they could attack with the rool at a dif angle...using it more as just a pick closer to rim for just a harden lay up
This is not news. Same thing happened a year ago. And Capela has regressed defensively slightly. He's not as quick as last year and he wasn't quick enough for the Warriors then. Why anybody would expect differently now is beyond reason.
Capela needs to play when Bogut or Looney are on the court. Clint still had a positive +/- in that scenario despite overall being a -19
A couple of issues here: Yes, Draymond is playing smart trying to guard against both options, but it is Capela's job to force him to make a choice. If Capela just stands there an lets him play both there is nothing James can do. Green is not just faking stepping up, he is taking a small step forward and trying to leave an angle to get between Capela and the basket before the lob arrives. This is easy to do with a stationary player, but not with someone is moving towards the basket or working to provide a good passing angle and better spacing. The second Dray steps forward or even fakes a step forward, or even turns his head towards Harden, Clint should run at the rim with hand up and ready for a lob. His goal would be to get between Dray and the rim and to make his far hand available for the pass and as far from Dray as possible. (Most people around in Yao's days know how a player should act when fronted by a smaller player.) By the time Harden has to make a decision between pass and floater, Clint should be at the rim. At times Clint could also increase the space between himself and Harden or himself and the basket so that instead of being able to guard the floater and the lob from a center position, Dray can guard neither. If somehow no lob or floater occur as a result of Clint's run at the rim, he should continue to the wing and set a pick for the corner man ( James never throws to that corner anyways... or is it the other side?) . Also, keep in mind Dray is faking help defense or double team, so Harden wouldn't get an open layup
The weakness of warriors line of death is that it does not have center, it is good to run into 3 seconds place to hit the score and let capela to get the rebounds. Anyway, warriors cut the connection of caplea. It is a good way to go to the inner side to shoot or layup.
Say what? Your terminology is too cryptic - "line of death", "3 seconds place", "cut the connection", "inner side to shoot". Please translate for our benefit.
I thought a smart adjustment last night was the Harden offensive rebound. Not so much of an adjustment as recognition that Draymond is either playing center field a bit or just straight up defending Hardens drives well. That’s fine. Just purposefully miss to the left and go right back up with an OReb and layup. That said i think the biggest thing was PJ Tucker’s rebounding. Clint is getting pulled out. That’s ok if you have other guys that then play strong down low. If Clint gets pulled out and your giving up constant OReb it’s a double whammy.
