The reason I rarely drink anymore is because of the hangovers. They didn't happen back in the day, now they ruin my entire day. That's enough for me haha

Congrats! 7 years.....that is really amazing.

I guess I'm lucky in that, while I like to have a few beers once or twice a week, I've never been in a position where I couldn't live without it.

Just an amazing accomplishment by you, OS. Congrats again and keep it up!

For me it was not that I couldn't live without it. I was going through a pretty rough and lonely time in my life and alcohol made the crappy days at work (never during work) or a random Tuesday night easier. I wasn't anywhere near happy in my life and would just say F it and pour another one. I looked up one day and realized that I had gotten drunk 5-6 days a week for months at a time. I wasn't personally a full blown alcoholic but I was definitely well on my way. It honestly sneaks up on you. You have to evaluate yourself constantly and I was not doing that.

Doing fine, @Rashmon. Thx for asking. Was just reminiscing about my time here on the board last night and wanted to thank everybody that replied.

Still going at it. Will be 12 years in mid October.

Good to hear and congrats. I saw your flurry of "likes" and when I saw your profile page was down I got worried. Most likely, your profile page has been down a long time. Glad all is well.

Yep. All is well. Don't post as much because I don't have anything to add or say that hasn't been said already. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyhow, hope all is well with you too man.

Funny to see this thread bump since my own drinking has gotten worse in the meantime. I'm not a raging alcoholic now or anything, but wish I did a bit less. Two phenomena make it really tiresome -- one, that the ratio of good buzzes to bad buzzes seems to be decreasing, and two, hangovers have gotten worse (my pet theory is that it has something to do with no longer having a gall bladder, but I haven't found any science to back me up). You'd think I wouldn't want to drink given these realities, but I do anyway. It's such a bizarre compulsion.

My drinking has gone to basically zero over the last 3 years. Not like I tried it just kind of happened. Too tired to want to get drunk.

That said... replace alcohol with the other drug that states are increasingly legalizing.

    WAY better experience.

Nice to hear you're doing well @OmegaSupreme

I was quite the drinker myself until 2 years ago when I decided to change my life and lose weight. First thing I did was give up the booze. Now I will on occasion have a tequila shot but only because I like the taste and I'll sip it. I haven't been drunk or hungover in over a year and I don't miss it at all.

Same. Mrs and I will have one glass of wine for a couple nights then not anything for months.

Started reducing alcohol intake about 4 years ago when my wife was pregnant. She stopped drinking and I didn't. One night we had a little pregnancy related scare (turned out to be nothing) and all I could think of was how incredibly stupid and selfish I was to impair myself in a way that would make me unable (/less able) to help my wife/baby if needed.

I didn't have an addiction like so many others, so quitting was easy for me. I have no idea what that would be like and can only say that I am inspired and impressed by people like @OmegaSupreme who overcome it. I'm really happy to see you have been better for 12 years.

I started working out and eating well and my alcohol intake dropped dramatically. I’ve dedicated myself to my work as well so I’m “on” a lot and into the weekends so I hate the feeling of being out of commission or not sharp.

    Coffee for me.

    Congrats OP.

My only drug now a days is Coffee.

The hangovers are just not worth it. I'll have some drinks at get togethers etc....every now and then. But in general, if I buy a 12 or 18 pack of beer it sits in the fridge for a month or 2, if not longer.

I had a 12 or 18 of beer in the fridge untouched since Jan or Feb.

Yep, like others here, it's interesting reading my post(s) in this thread and realizing how much has changed since then.

Don't get me wrong, I still like to drink my wine at night, but usually just a glass. Maybe more on the weekends. And I'll drink beer by the pool on Saturdays. Once I start to feel relaxed, I'll usually just stop.

Even so, I honestly can't remember the last time I said to myself "I want to get real drunk tonight!" Just not a priority for me anymore.

Glad you're still doing well, OS!

You're good people, glad to hear you're doing well.

I've known some people who didn't have the strength to do what you've done, much respect.

I had to get a last minute fill in for a cookoff team last weekend. I invited an old friend who is a kitchen manager at a local restaurant I hadn’t seen in years.... I’ve never seen someone let their alcohol addiction (he may have been doing meth or something in his car) dominate them so much.

It was like babysitting a drunk toddler. By 11am he was completely sloshed, barely able to speak or walk, and was trying to operate a grill. Every 5 minutes he’d have another beer in his hand, and I’d have to take it away. I couldn’t let him out of my sight because he was constantly getting into arguments with people. At one point he almost got kicked out of the event and he nearly started crying, calling himself a fck up and wouldn’t stop apologizing to me. Yet even after that he was still sneaking beers.

It was sad. After the event he texted me thank you for inviting me, I had a great time... didn’t even remember how terrible he was. Alcohol or whatever the hell he was on is going to take his life before he’s 30 if he doesn’t snap out of it.
