Trump is worse than Bush Jr. But, it seems pointless to make a best president thread be yet another thing on Trump.

I imagine this poll is going to split with conservatives picking Reagan, the father of modern conservatism, and liberals picking Bush Sr, the least bad option as the most restrained Republican (with Ford perhaps before some folks' birth). Shading liberal, of course I picked Bush Sr.

I didn't realize you were that damn old!

Its something that would have been done. He gets too much credit for this.
Do you think he did something operational wise other than approving money

AIDS wasn't and isnt a cause of his.

Essentially his function was throwing money

Good points. The one trump defender took an innocuous statement ("trump not belonging on this list") and turned the focus on trump. Interesting to note that two Democrats are the one providing the correct history and due to a republican president.

But also note I chose the most conservative president as "favorite republican president". I better turn in my "liberal" card... ;)

Nothing is worse than Bush. Trump has caused you guys to lose perspective. I mean do you remember having to throw a trillion dollars to prevent complete financial collapse in late 08'

Do you remember i raq finally cracking apart in 06'. Do you remember Katrina.

Cant believe i have to argue this

My gosh... read a history book. Heck, read what I posted... GWB fulfilled a Clinton promise. Clinton couldn't "get it done."

If I had to select a favorite Republican president from the 1900s and on it would be Teddy.

In my lifetime it would be George Bush senior. I like that he did what was right even though it was not a popular thing and was against what he said earlier. Look things can change and you have to be willing to adapt and change for the good of the country.
I dont really blame Jr. for what happened as much as others on here. I will say that I think he was more of a puppet to Cheney who I think is a terrible person.

Let's not cite examples, because I think the disagreement is over the measuring stick. You would evaluate them on outcomes, I would evaluate them on their means. Trump doesn't respect the separation of powers, checks and balances, the rule of law, or the bill of rights. I'd be happy to take another financial disaster, or another disastrous foreign adventure than have that infection in the oval office.

But, I'll try to steer us back again. This thread is not called "Who was the best Republican president?" It is called "What is your favorite Republican president?" So, even if Junior was a monumental screwup, if you like his country charm he can still be a valid choice. I know Trump will be some folks' favorite too for some reason.

    Bush Sr. for me.

Actually well qualified for the position and made policy decisions that benefited the nation at the expense of taking political hits from his party. He was the last "country over party" GOP president we had.

How does Clinton failing to get the funding for Africa HIV/AIDs passed but GWB succeeded mean Clinton gets credit for what GWB did? Clinton can claim he identified a problem and tried to get it solved, but GWB deserves the credit for getting it done.

Oh wait, that's exactly what Bill Clinton did say...

If this country does not a have a giant recession after 5-6 more years of Trump then I don’t understand anything about this world.

Lol, I missed the part about “ in our lifetime” and wasn’t impressed with the list given.

I suppose in my lifetime was Bush Sr. I just admire folks with principles, even if I disagree with his policy. He raised taxes because he knew he had to and lost because of it, along with just being a crappy political candidate (low energy).

I miss low energy boring candidates that just spit out nuanced policy positions.

Yeah lets ignore actual events. This is my point. Trump is unlikable but GWB had real disasters

Trump spending too nuch and not taking in enough is a long term problem. We aren't headed for a 2008 disaster as of now.

There are factors that led to 08 that arent in play right now. 08 started from Glass Steagall being repealed at the end of Clinton's term and was exasperated by cheap credit.

Trump does want regulations lifted but probably won't get that

I know it was your point. I said it was your point that you wanted to measure by actual events to contrast with how I measure (which, btw, are also actual events, but are not discrete outcomes). Your approach is valid, but I don't see the world or governance that way. So, I'd say Trump is the worst president of all time measuring them the way I want to measure them. Since you're incredulous, I'm trying to explain why you and I will not be able to agree. I don't think things that happen tell you much about the worth of a person.

Bush's problems stem from his lack of being qualified specifically not being smart enough.

So if you want to go beyond results that is the biggest issue with Bush

Trump is a worse president but Bush Jr has caused more damage... So far.

But that has more to do with being delt a bad hand with 9/11 and using the war on terror for justification for the worst foreign policy decision in my lifetime which was the invasion of Iraq.

God knows how Trump would handle a 9/11 type catastrophy.
