I know it's been said many times, but why is Shaq even on TV?

Somewhere about the time shooting wrapped on "Kazaam!", Shaq went from "Big Kid Shaq" - a comic-book trickster giant, to grumpy old man whose major contribution is a series of curmudgeonly grunts to reaffirm whatever conventional wisdom may be

It's pretty clear he bears the psychic scars of being exported from LA by a less dominant player (Kobe) and, even now, being overshadowed by ALlen Iverson nostalgia, one of his true contemporaries whose actual on-court success pales in comparison to Shaq.

Shaq is embittered because he has a not-untenable case that he was underappreciated in his day and even more so now; unfortuantely for him nobody roots for Goliath, especially when they're as aesthetically basic about it as Shaq.

However, this has combined to create a uniquely terrible TV presence. No insight, no analysis, obviously an agenda to pursue. I don't really find Barkley funny anymore, his act is stale and hasn't aged well, but at least it's an act. Go sell shitty pizza, Shaq.

 

This is my favorite post in a very long time. Shaq shouldn't be on TV. He has no redeeming qualities as a television presence. None. I have never heard anything insightful come from his mouth nor anything funny (though he is always attempting to make jokes). He is combative with Barkley and I really think a lot of Barkley's decline on that show can be directly attributed to Shaq's presence. Can some Sheriff's office please put Shaq back on so we no longer have to suffer through this?

 

Candace Parker is great though.

That should be the ABSOLUTE LAST thing we hope for.

Imagine if en route to a championship, the Thunder beat the Warriors and we beat some other team, besides the Warriors, in the WCF to get to the Finals and win ourselves a ring.

Everyone will say that this championship is tainted cause the best team got sabotaged in the first round. I can already hear the BS that the media will spew if WE don't knock off the current champs to become the newly crowned champs.

 

How many years are we going to be fooled into thinking the Thunder are some sleeping playoff giant?

The Thunder have lost 8 out of 11 playoff games in the Post-Durant era.

Not too much about their play this season, especially in the last few months, has indicated this trend is changing, especially against the Warriors.

I still don't understand how Shaq has time to be on this panel when he accepts ever. single. advertising. job. in. existence. And probably seeks out all the companies that have not asked him to do an ad, yet.

Then again, given the quality of Shaq's advertising, he probably has time to film his commercials during the panel breaks in these games.

Count me in as another individual who objectively, Rockets fandom aside, thinks Shaq is just an uninteresting TV presence. At least when some folks don't have the charismatic personality, they bring insight, stats, unique takes, etc. Shaq just doesn't bring... anything. He just seems angry, and tries to speak over his contemporaries far too often, using his rings as the only defense for his weak arguments.

 

Shaq being so thin skinned with a huge ego also doesn't help. As big as he is this makes him look so small.

 

I think I've told this story before, but the older sister of a good friend of mine used to tutor Shaq in math at Cole HS in SA. She was a senior when he was there, and her job was to get him to pass basic algebra. She ended up having to quit out of frustration because he literally could not grasp the concept of X representing a number. No matter how many different ways she tried to explain it to him, he just could not understand how a letter could represent a number in a math problem.

Now imagine someone THAT stupid being expected to have reasonable, informed, flushed out thoughts about a complex sport like basketball. He's been blessed to be surrounded by savvy business advisers, his parents have been an incredibly positive influence in his life, and he's done well for himself, but Lord help him he's a ****ing idiot. It is what it is.

 

I guess. Maybe she just gets held back by everyone else but players only is truly the gap in logic this country could do without. For once lol...My god. Players should be able to provide little insights to the game the average viewer isn’t seeing. Little quirks about certain players and plays and coaches, etc. maybe be something of historians. But the way THEY become the average viewer, with armchair QB at best commentary, by VOICING THE OPINIONS OF AVERAGE VIEWERS TO AVERAGE VIEWERS.............it’s just insane. It’s insanity. It’s anarchy. As a sovereign nation we allowed Shaq to assume a position on national tv and nobody ever revolted and threw his stupid ass off television. And after so long he’s become beloved? For being ****ing bad at what is easily the most simple job ever. Comment on sports. He doesn’t even have to be remotely accurate, you can barely understand him because he mumbles half the time...and he’s done such a **** job we decided we want that level of broadcast the whole game?

At least she tries. I’ll give her that.

 

yea, well don't expect anyone to give Rockets props until we actually beat the Warriors in a playoffs series one time.

All that do right now just are trying to convince the average viewer that the playoffs aren't decided yet.
