What does that have to do with anything I said?

How many school children are there?

Name the amount of jobs you have to have a ongoing certification after you graduate to maintain employment.

Those numbers are of little value of you don't give the proper context.

How do teachers rank among other jobs in those countries with the same level of education.

    $36k average English household income

    US average is $56k

So i would say that in both countries the ratios are similar

I would say that English average income is much lower so teachers pay would reflect that.

Either way it ruins your previous argument.

Youre right i was wrong on us teachers doing better but its the same so US teachers dont have an argument for an increase based on others which is my overall point

I've never seen anyone work harder or more hours than my Mom did as a K teacher and speech therapist/special ed instructor, it was full-time. And I used to work 60+ hour weeks wearing a suit doing relatively stupid consulting ****. Maybe she just cared that much, maybe they all do, I dunno.

wow, this couldn't be more wrong. As a matter of fact, it's the absolute most incorrect statement I've seen in this thread. Just as a start It takes incredible organization skills, psychological dexterity, extreme patience, physical commands, social ingenuity as well as an prowess for planning and an aptitude for multiple subjects beyond the basics of the rudimentary material.

yes and no. A good district (full of good teachers) brings a ton of value to an area, thereby raising home prices and bringing in more property taxes which brings in more money for the district. I'd love to move in to the district where my wife teaches. Her school is one of the top elementary schools in the metroplex..but my house in that district would cost us about $120,000 more.

Actually, there is a teacher shortage - and it is growing. 1 in 5 new teachers last less than 5 years due to the stress and demands of the job.

Currently the average teacher pay is almost 20% LESS than similar professions.

so you agree you were wrong but that does not matter because you are going to continue the argument anyway.

    seems legit.

You laid it out much succinctly than I did.

Thanks for that, hopefully some posters have learned from this.

Coincidentally, today my wife got home at 6:15 and has these piles already started for the weekend.

But please tell me again how they “only work 185 days”.

Teachers work is also different. In an office worker can go grab water when they want, take 5 to check an email, go the bathroom whenever they would like to throughout the day. If they get back five minutes late from lunch once a month or so that's fine. Teachers don't have the luxury in their work days. They have to be watching like a hawk in 30 different directions or kids will hurt themselves, their classmates, property etc. While they are working there is no downtime. It only changes when they have a music teacher, testing proctors, or something like that.

No my original argument was teachers are paid fairly

Then i thought they made less in other nations but it seems they make the same. Therefore US teachers are on par with the rest of world and are paid fairly

You were correct in comparing other nations teachers to their general population and i admitted that. Relax

Its all nice to talk about how hard teachers work. School is a public good paid by taxes.

There isnt any money for it. Period. They make a nice middle class income like most public sector professionals.

Every year school funding is an issue in Texas

Not being a jerk about the hard work. Thats not the issue

Which one of you Texans want to pay more property taxes?

It is a generally accepted understanding that taking a public sector job is an income sacrifice because public sector funds are limited

You cant just increase your income by selling more cars. Yall act like its a magic tax money tree somewhere

    We appreciate it

Public schools in Cali run the gamut. Some are great and some suck. But Cali has a budget surplus. Sure there are always problems with the budget and nobody should be careless with the money. But teachers won't bankrupt the state.

I always say California has goodschools but its the university system

I looked it up after the post and saw you have the same problem between rich and poor schools.

As i always a lot of those problems have to be fixed in the homes

I mentioned this earlier. The starting pay is actually pretty decent, but the raises are deplorable. After 24 years AND a masters degree, my wife only makes about 5-7K more than a starting teacher. That's really sad. As a matter of fact, I started at my current job making the same rate as her 11 years ago. I now make about 12K more than she does
