I think the economy will matter. Trump will have a hard fight with the present economy. If we have a recession, and especially if economic troubles are pinned on his trade war policies, he may as well not run.

Althouse on Trump's rally yesterday in Michigan, very interesting take on Trump's speech from someone who is sort of in the middle on him.

I'm not aware of any Trump re-election thread being started yet? I suppose this could go there if one exists. At any rate thought a few of you might be interested in this.

commentary on Trump's rally that spells out what the author takes to be some of the implications for Democrats:

Donald Trump is not a professional politician, despite having held the highest political office in our country for more than two years now. Professional politicians did not beat him last time, and there are no compelling reasons to think they will do so next year. On top of his personal appeal, such as it is, he has the built-in advantage enjoyed by all incumbents and a dubious claim to a strong economy. Trump could be on pace to win in a landslide.

What can Democrats hope to do to prevent this? They could start by settling on a candidate early, preferably one who does not emerge from the first few debates and nominating contests looking and sounding like the bloodied victor in a freestyle cage fight. This is unlikely to happen, for two reasons. One is simply that the ideological gap between genuine progressives and centrist liberals is very real and very wide. There is probably no single candidate who will be acceptable to both wings of the party. My bet is on the side with all the money, to say nothing of almost total control of the actual party machinery. The other reason is simply that all of 15 or so of these people really want to be president. No one is going to come away with the Democratic nomination unscathed, but the eventual winner will set fundraising records for reporters to ooh and ahh over.

Meanwhile the temptation for the inevitable centrist Democratic nominee to make the election another would-be character referendum will prove overwhelming. Once again we will be reminded that the president sometimes uses crude language, that he demeans good people, that he is not always well informed, and that — wait for it — he intensely dislikes journalists. It will go about as well for whomever the party runs against Trump this time as it did for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

That was not written in a way that would lead anyone to believe the author is "in the middle on him".

sure it was. I think she herself is constantly surprised at how much Trump impresses her when she doesn't expect him too. Not that you care, but you could do a search on her blog for her earliest postings on the Trump candidacy and see what I mean about her being in the middle on Trump.

I also think people who lean left or are Democrats/anti-Trumpers sometimes are surprised by folks like Althouse who started out disliking Trump but came around to, if not liking him, accepting him. It does happen on occasion.

Has Joe Biden announced yet? If not, once he sees this, he may be inclined to reconsider any such plans that he had been working up:

Klobuchar: 'I have no reason not to believe' Biden accuser

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said Sunday that she has no reason not to believe Lucy Flores, the woman who has accused Joe Biden of kissing her head without consent in 2014. I have no reason not to believe her,” Klobuchar, who is running for president in 2020, said on ABC's "This Week."

“I think we know from campaigns and politics that people raise issues and they have to address them, and that’s what he will have to do with the voters if he gets into the race," she said of Biden, who is likely to soon put in his bid for the 2020 nomination

Flores, a former Nevada state assemblywoman, wrote in an op-ed on Friday that at a campaign rally supporting her bid for lieutenant governor while Biden was vice president, he came up to her from behind, put his hands on her shoulders, sniffed her hair and kissed her on the back of her head. "The vice-president of the United States of America had just touched me in an intimate way reserved for close friends, family, or romantic partners — and I felt powerless to do anything about it," she wrote.

If there starts to be a steady stream of these sorts of complaints that start coming out against Biden during this campaign, how will that work? Seriously, we are still several months out from the first debate. When you get close to the primaries, things get rougher. And then when the eliminations start happening during the primaries, things have a tendency to get flat out nasty.

We are almost a year out from the first primaries. I do not know how much of it is true, but Joe has a reputation for this kind of stuff. Does anyone really believe this is the end of this, or is it just the beginning?

The ides that Trump could win in a landslide is particularly ridiculous to me. Have you not been paying attention? It's about as likely as Trump getting Mondaled by the Democrat.

40% of the country would vote for Gozer the Gozarian or Skynet for President before they'd flip to Trump, and roughly the same amount would do the same before voting whoever the Democrat is.

The idea of anybody winning in a landslide is one of the most ridiculously divorced from reality statements I've read in recent memory. I can't take anybody seriously who proposes that with a straight face. It's about as likely as the NRA supporting gun control legislation.

What should concern the Democrats is that Gozer the Gozarian might actually win votes in the field of Democrats that is currently shaping up.

It doesn't happen on occasion, it happens all the time.

At the end of the day, most voters fall in line and sacrifice some of their values to support their "team".

That can be Trump or Andrew Jackson or any number of other prior Presidents.

    This.

I suppose you could have a landslide in a contemporary sense..... but I don't see it.

I guess the Democrat nominee could flip Florida and Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Ohio IF the economy really goes in the shitter.
