Who are some Second Tier / Third Tier O lineman? This team really wants to go forward with all rookies?
But look at the contracts they gave out. Outside of Brandon Brooks, these were all shorter, prove-it type deals. Doubt Eagle fans were high fiving and screaming Super Bowl when they Patrick Robinson and Nick Foles. Malcolm Jenkins - 3 yrs. $15M Alshon Jeffrey - 1 yr. $9.5M Nigel Bradham - 2 yrs. $7M Nick Foles - 2 yrs. $11M Patrick Robinson - 1 yr. $775K Chris Long - 2 yrs. $4.5M Don't get me wrong, I was hoping Gaines would've been a little more aggressive but's still super early in the offseason. Still think there are some FAs that can help out on sensible deals so hope we're not completely done. A lot will come down to the draft as well. But looking at the deals at some of the guys I wanted to target and resign, namely Trent Brown and Honey Badger, I can't be too disappointed yet. Any remaining FAs that you like in particular? I would really like to see us bring in Tyrod Taylor for one.
I know! I liked it so much better when they were parking Brinks trucks on Osweiler, Miller and Allen's lawn. FUN!
But they brought the players in. Brooks was one of the top guards available. Jeffrey was one of the top WRs available. Long just came off a super bowl winning campaign. People have the misconception that people that go out and sign the top players in FA don't win. It sometimes works. Like you, I wanted Trent Brown and Matthieu. I would like to get another corner so they can focus on the offensive line in the draft. I like Desir and Breeland. I also want a running back and we need a DE and OLB (in case they can't sign Clowney). Coleman is the biggest name RB available, not sure I want him but he will definitely help. I'm curious about trade options. I don't know who's available to be traded for but one big trade could change the whole outlook of this offseason.
If this is your go to saying, you need a new one. Its lame. Smith parked those brinks trucks on their lawn cause at the time, this organization didnt really have an identity or core. We were shuffling qbs and Foster was on the way out. Mix that in what terrible player scouting and you got a recipe for disaster. Fast forward to today, where we have a TRUE qb, a good defense and an opportunity to be better with CB help, and yet we are sitting on our hands.
Yep, this means they should never pay top dollar for a FA again. No matter what 3/4 of the NFL are doing. No need to emulate what successful teams are doin. I cant wait to see HOW THE Browns do this yr vs the Texans and the excuses that will be made by some on this MB.
MAYBE the Texans look around at their team, division, and conference and realize they aren't contenders next year. So why spend huge on free agents? Last year we had a last place schedule and were lucky to make the playoffs after starting 0-3. This year we have a first place schedule. Here are the non-division games we have in 2019. Oakland, Denver, New England, Carolina, Atlanta, @kansas City, @Chargers, @Baltimore, @New Orleans, and @Tampa. The Colts are a better team. The Jags will be improved with Foles instead of Bortles, and the Titans will probably be improved with that offensive line and defense. Then lets look at the free agents we "missed out on". The 49ers gave up on Trent Brown and traded him to the Patriots for a late 3rd round pick. He goes to New England and does a good job because he's blocking for Brady... the guy that never gets sacked because he gets the ball out in no time. Meanwhile, we have Deshaun Watson that holds the ball way too long. Not sure having a giant left tackle like Brown would work with Watson running around in the pocket, and recent history with left tackles from New England is quite sketchy after Solder became a turn stlye for the Giants. From most accounts Ja'Wuan James is just a solid starter but has missed 18 games in 4 years. He's now the highest paid RT in the league..... Mathieu and Jackson.... I'm not sorry to see either of them go. They were 2 of our 4 starters in the secondary that were getting burned on a regular basis. T.Y. Hilton owned us all year. Mathieu got beat one on one in the end zone a number of times last year and was not good against tight ends. People fell in love with him because he was the biggest named safety we've ever had and talked a big game. He wasn't worth 14 million per year. Jackson might be a solid safety, but we all know he is awful at finding the ball in coverage. In my opinion this team has too many holes to fill in one off season. The entire offensive line is a question mark. Lamar Miller is a year older. The WR core is still Hopkins and cross your fingers with Fuller and now Coutee. None of our tight ends strike you as being a legit starter. Watt is a year older and outside of Reader the interior DLine is not impressive. Likely losing Covington creates another hole. The linebacking core is lacking depth and has question marks. McKinney has his limitations, Clowney probably won't be full go until week 3-4 if he holds out until week 1 and he costs more in offsides penalty yards than he delivers in sacks, Cuningham struggles in coverage, and Mercilus disappeared last year. Strangely enough... the safety position with Reid, Hal, and Gipson is one of the positions I feel better about on this team. We need a number 1 corner. Joseph is a dinosaur and Roby is on a prove it deal for a reason. I would like to bring in Ronald Darby on a multi-year deal. Next year he will probably struggle some coming off the ACL but should be good to go in 2020. Unless the Texans have a magical draft like the Saints had in 2017 where they landed 4 starters and 2 pro bowlers in their first 4 picks with Lattimore, Ramczyk, Williams, and Kamura we aren't competing for a Super Bowl. Too many holes.
Let Janice die, then watch the kids go on a money feeding frenzy and then we will see what happens. Or Cletus could get run over by a truck. It happens. We dont know the future is my point
It should certainly be a consideration. I would be willing to bet you were signing the same sad song this time last year when they lost out on Nate Solder.... We have AMPLE evidence that big free agent splashes rarely return what fans *think*/*hope* they will, and yet - every year, fans forget that and SCREAM how much they want big free agent splashes. 3/4 of the NFL?........ Do you want to walk that back a bit?.... I see a bunch of non-playoff teams throwing ridiculous money at good - not great - players. You don't win games in March. Sure, the Browns look salty. They also have a first-year HC who is going to have to manage a wild population of huge personalities and off-the-charts expectations. I'd like to see how that plays out before we crown them.
They're not sitting on their hands. They've signed two defensive backs and several prominent ones are still available. There's also the trade route as well as the draft..... They don't hand out trophies in March.
Might be time for Watson to request a trade. At the very least, to put pressure on this complacent front office to give a damn. Imagine getting demolished by a division rival at home in a playoff game and then going into next season with the same exact coaching staff and no significant free agents despite having a ton of cap space. Only the Texans
