Well it should tell you that 7 of the top ten 3point shooting teams are currently in the playoffs and that 3 of the bottom ones are currently in.

And it's entirely possible that only 2 of the bottom teams actually get in.

What does that say for the correlation of teams who shoot a high number of threes and teams and winning?

So it is relevant to the discussion? See my first post:
Not sure where you got the idea that I’m against Moreyball or think it’s ineffective.

You know what I have no idea what your point was and is.

i never said you thought Moreyball was ineffective but the point of the thread was to show that the NBA was moving toward more teams playing this way.

Why did you compare the records of Houston and San Antonio if not to question this premise?

Not sure why me comparing their records has gotten such a response out of you. If the premise is that the NBA is playing more Moreyball because it’s successful, it’s relevant to the discussion that teams are having success without resorting to it.

    Wait what?

Nobody said teams are not having success without resort to it, the premise that you stated is shown by your own research.

Teams that play moreyball are more successful, that is true right?

I think it’s true. This is circular as we probably have the same beliefs. I made the comment about the Spurs because it was interesting to me how large the disparity was in their attempts, not to criticize OP or other arguments. You said: “that’s not relevant.” This post is generally about Moreyball, and I think that disparity is relevant to a discussion, even if only to make the point that some teams still have success without it but more are having success with it.

Regular season success or championships? I think that is what has to be studied since it's the real goal. What do the champions do in the playoffs? I'm not saying or implying I know the answer. I am curious to know the answer though.

No that's not what needs to studied because nobody is saying you need to play that way to win championships.

But both the Warriors and the Cavaliers were both in the top 10 shooting threes over the last 3 year's I would bet they have been closer to the top 5.

How can the consistency of officiating change this suddenly?

Edit: this post was meant to be in the game thread with a couple minutes left in the fourth. lol

I actually think the refs resent having to officiate this kinda of basketball. For them, a changing NBA means having to change the way they do things.

The technology may or may not be already here, but it would be interesting to see how the game would be played if there was a range of points between 2 and 3 to better account for the midrange game. For example, a step inside the 3 pt line would be worth 2.9 points, a step outside the restricted area would be worth 2.1 points. Obviously, it would require some technology to score points in real time, and the math of adding tenth points would be impossible for both players and fans alike lol.

Whoops, this was supposed to be in the game thread. No idea how it got here.

I think NBA officiating has been consistently suspicious since around 1998.

Why do we call it Morey ball when the Rockets won two championships with Hakeem by shooting inside and 3pters.

    It is Rudy ball.

    ;)

I may have missed this being posted elsewhere but this article pairs nicely with the discussion in this thread.

HIGHLY recommend people giving it a read. Pretty long, but great stuff in that article.

Just a little taste of what’s featured. Red line is the league average point return on all shots. The blue is the point sper shot at every foot distance. Mid range. Yuck.

What about MTV Jock James style? keep same court dimensions and 3pt line BUT Add another basket like 5ft higher and make that worth 4 pts when shot behind 3pt line. And if ever some crazy athletic dudes can dunk a 15ft basket make that worth 5 pts! LOL
