I think it is based on a false premise. NY competed to get this opportunity. More than 200 cities in the US, Canada and Mexico submitted bids. The bidders were narrowed down to 20 finalists. Long Island was selected even though its offered incentives were far from the highest. So, pretending that Amazon showed up with a 3 billion dollar coupon that they made up themselves is kind of disingenuous.
Good point. Most of the negotiation process was secretive and opaque, so it's hard to say exactly who demanded what, when. It's not a stretch to accuse large companies of making huge demands for bringing operations into a particular city or state, when in the past we've been shown that the drawbacks can outweigh the benefits. For a long time now they've gotten away with playing cities off each other because the public used to buy the narrative that they only bring prosperity, when that isn't always true. Politicians would grant deals that they knew were poor in the long term, because in the short term they got to cash in on the job creation label. The public is going to take time to look the gift horse in the mouth from here on, I think, and that's fine.
I'm at the point where I see conservative AOC outrage and just assume it's more rabble rousing tedium. Outrage fatigue is a real thing. You've got to let the boogyman's Q raiting die down a little bit before you try to scare people with the boogyman again. The rests in the sheet music that you don't play are every bit as important to the music as the notes that you do play.
So it's more like (?): Bezos: I want 25 pizzas! And I have this $300 coupon! Pizza employees: Wait, what? Are you the schlong guy? Anyway, lulz. There is no $300 coupon in the real world. Like, just order a drone to go steal one or something. (*high fives other pimply pizza employee*) Bezos: Oh no? Look at the fine print! A member of the corporate oversight committee for all of Pizza Hut wrote this for me. Pizza employees: Whoa, dude. WTF? I don't even...
Yes, she does know that. What's your point? You do realize that they all get a set amount to pay staff and hers chose to spread it out more.
