Yes, people calling out other people for not being punk enough is the most unpunk thing in this thread. Outside of Weezer.

Sorry, but the thread called for 90s punk rock and the first page was filled with 2000s emo YouTube videos. Emo/screamo is not punk rock, period. There are some decent punk bands from the 2000s and beyond, it’s disrespectful to credit emo bands as the continuation of punk, influenced by it or not.

 

Appreciate the post but disagree with the quote. Punk as an idea can mean a lot of things and apply to many forms of art and media, that I agree with. Punk rock, however, is a pretty rigid genre of music, it has a recipe. It’s simple, fast, and energetic. 3 minutes for a song is an eternity in punk.

 

90s punk.... there are so many variations by this point and so many to choose from. My fav punk rock from the 90s crossed into different punk genres.

Here are some bands/albums:

Toadies "Rubberneck" (94) and Stars Above Hell Below (2001 but from a largely 90s Texas punk band)
Goldfinger "Stomping Ground" (2000 but at the end of the 90s basically. Very up beat and melodical)
Vandals "Hitler Bad Vandals Good" album (1998 ... largely satirical and good natured jests at society)
Off Spring were a great band up until the end of the 90s (Americana is my fav album they ever made and is worth listening to all the way through)

 

Punk isn't about following the rules. To suggest punk in such a rigid way itself is close to describing many punk bands, but it flowered into different variations as punks started to just do what they want. Punk is a state of mind and thank god it evolved. Or else it would just all be uniform and boring, and very unpunk.

agree and i think d boon would agree with you too - he was saying that punk as an idea can be whatever you want it to be - to put rules on punk is pretty un-punk.

i would argue that punk rock in its pure form was dead by the mid 80's.

Are we talking punk rock or other genres? It’s just a matter of classification. A lot of the bands posted are decidedly not punk, and that’s fine. Radiohead is a wonderful band but if someone called them punk I would disagree. Most of the bands on the first page are just alternative. That’s all!
