I generally have issue with those subsidies, but again, they are different - they are available to any farms that meet the basic requirements. They are not giving one farm an advantage over others. That's very different than picking one specific company to have an advantage over their competitors.

As an example, part of the deal was that Amazon was not required to go through the local land/zoning/etc reviews process - something every other business would have to do to use that land. That's granting a specific company an edge, which goes against every free market principle out there. It's no different than telling Marriott Hotels that they are exempt from hotel guest taxes while the W or Holiday Inn are not - it would let them discount their prices and creates a non-level playing field.

It appears that Newark and New Jersey have reached out to Amazon to express that their 7 Billion offer is still on the table.

No, they do it because politicians only look at the short-term because that's what gets them elected. If it has consequences down the line, it's generally irrelevant because they have ideally moved on to something else.

As soon as Trump got elected, he got some A/C company in Indiana a sweetheart deal from the state government to save a few hundred jobs there and got all sorts of publicity for it. Several months later, the company just cancelled a few hundred different jobs instead - but it's old news at that point so Trump pays no price. All the incentive for politicians is to make big positive headlines - not to create good long-term policy.

The Amazon deal could be good or bad for NY - but it was negotiated largely in secret by two politicians with higher ambitions (Governor and Mayor) without much input from local leaders and these deals historically rarely live up to their lofty expectations. People have plenty of reason to be skeptical.

I'm sure plenty of other jurisdictions will as well over the coming weeks and months. It's no different than stadium deals that end up enriching the stadium owners over the cities/states, or Olympic bids that fail miserably to benefit the countries that win those things. The promises by the selling entity (Amazon, sports teams, Olympics) almost never live up to the hype, but with enough buyers, someone will pay.

That is totally not true. In stadium deals, government use taxpayers' money to build stadiums and hand them to franchise owners. In Amazon's case, it is future tax credits which Amazon owns only if it creates those jobs and pays ppl 150k+. Huge difference.

With that being said, Amazon has been arrogant. For projects this magnitude, you need take care of everyone and do a ton of PR works beforehand. But Amazon think everyone should just kiss its a** and bend backwards. Nevertheless, it is still unbelievably stupid to just walk away. 27B tax revenue now just goes somewhere. I will think for ppl who love to give away "free" stuffs by using others' money should welcome more money put in the pool. Nope, we want stay poor so the rent won't go higher and we still collect the same welfare, food stamps and Medicaid. That is just fine with us. LOL.

Please explain how that headline can be a matter of interpretation?

Did it have a question mark I am missing?

Well, we are on the verge of derailing an AOC thread. But anyway....

I don't think I ever said I agreed with how the headline interprets recent events RE the border.

What I was trying to convey was that the Trump supporters are disappointed with this bill. That would seem to be obvious.

I would guess that they think it's an "open borders" bill because: a) it doesn't fund the amount of wall Trump wants b) it has some language that is aimed at preventing "family breakup." (leaving aside whether children brought in by adults are really their children; many Trump supporters think that whole family thing is just a ruse--and I would tend to agree.).

There may be other reasons wall supporters don't like the bill.

BTW, perhaps this should show that Breitbart isn't part of the Trump campaign; they have been pretty critical of the way Trump has handled this govt shutdown and the border issue etc.

The Democratic party, increasingly. Many long-time Democrat members of Congress are afraid of her, or are afraid of crossing her.

if you can't even acknowledge that fact you're right this a useless conversation.

and the you have the audacity to post another lie about a open borders bill.

She is perhaps one of the few exceptions. Most are afraid of AOC.

Actually, my respect for Pelosi has gone up just a bit, because she has been showing some daylight between herself and the BSC Dems like AOC.

Well, haha. Most of the conversations we have are useless. I won't say that's my fault.

And I don't have to acknowledge anything I don't observe to be a fact.

Then it should be cut and dried that these cynics clearly defied the will of the borough of Queens, Governor Cuomo, and Amazon.

I'm sure the voters will punish Big Grassroots in November if you're correct. Good luck getting back to Albany, state Senator Michael Gianaris!

    Get a clue breh.

    That's not how it works.

That's not how any of it works.
