I don't know, but politicians spend more time running for election or helping others get elected then they probably do actually governing. Kind of a terrible cycle that has developed.

It's like a Hollywood movie where the white, anglo, wayward, lost, rocker son of a wealthy county judge marries an heiress
worth half a billion and then finds purpose as the only one that can save the hispanics. They've taken him in and he even
    has a hispanic name.

Its like Dances With Wolves, The Last Samurai etc.

What should we call this episode:

    "Dances with rich gringos?"

    "Last trust fund baby?"

    "Whitey to the rescue?"

Just curious -- how does one generally prefer conservative policies......and then vote for Beto?

Eh, Ok. But whatever the reason you didn't like Cruz, still not sure how you can square preferring conservative policies with voting for Beto. If you wanted to protest vote, there were other options.

I found someone who tried to map Beto. Looking at where they put Biden, Harris, and Sanders, I'm not sure they've got the Authoritarian-Libertarian scale right, but the economic horizontal slide is right., imo.

Uhhh.. I don't think Bernie's desire the have the government run virtually every industry from healthcare to education to
banking is in any way libertarian.

These 'progressives' use of government to mandate their beliefs is Authoritarianism at its finest.

The irony is Trump's team has reduced government power by privatizing more and by reducing government rules and regulations.
The democrats are for more government control over industry, regulations and state mandate so that is authoritarian.

Look at the actions not the emotional response to the people's words you sissies.

Reading the accompanying article, this matrix is considering economic liberty on the horizontal left-right axis, with Trump far on the liberty side, which makes sense. Sanders is far on the left with all his socialized healthcare, education, etc stuff. The vertical authoritarian-libertarian axis is liberty on "everything else" according to the article. I think "libertarian" was probably the wrong word to use, but whatever. Trump's deregulation is economic, so it goes on the other axis. On the vertical axis, you'd still have stuff like his immigration policy, and his attitudes about executive power, attacks on first amendment rights of the press, LGBT policy. He has some liberal social positions like protection of religious institutions, gun rights, etc. But -- and here I'll get partisan -- given that his liberal social positions are just political expediencies and what he is really essentially about is maximizing personal power, I think calling him authoritarian is right. I'd probably bump someone like Kamala Harris higher on the authoritarian scale though for the way she pursues climate change and social equity goals. But, I probably need to see more of her to say that. Still, what strikes me about the 'liberal' Beto is that he's not racing to the left like Harris, Sanders, Booker, Warren, etc. He's fighting against some bad Trump policies, but he's not advocating for any liberal policy that isn't already mainstream -- carbon tax, mar1juana legalization, DACA, these things are not risky for a Democrat to endorse.

I prefer conservative fiscal policies. Just can't find a party that actually practices any. Thought I was a liberal on social policies but I (or the spectrum) may have moved so I'm now the dreaded moderate (imo).

I voted Beto and Lizzie even though I usually would vote for my economic self-interest if I'm honest.

So, candidates matter and it does happen.

There is a party called the Libertarian party. No, it's not perfect. But it might fit what you are describing above better than the GOP or the Dems.

I'd have to say that this chart is very flawed. On the issue of single-payer alone, that puts Beto well away from anything deemed Libertarian.

And Harris and Sanders too -- not sure how they are placed anywhere near Libertarian -- not with their Big Government plans, healthcare and otherwise.

Unless you are making over 420k you did not vote for you economic self interest. Even if you are making 200k I bet your taxes barely went down or might have gone up especially if you have big house.

I have never met a Mexican named Beto.

I have certainly never met a Mexican named O’Rourke.

But then again maybe I need to get out more.
