Daryl Morey has been told to avoid the repeater tax. Not the luxury tax but the repeater tax.
There have been very few teams that have gone into repeater tax territory and there is a good reason for it at the tax is absolutely crushing.

Below I have posted the incredible tax consequences.
    • 250 percent up to $5 million
    • 275 percent up to $10 million
    • 350 percent up to $15 million
    • 425 percent up to $20 million
    • 475 percent up to $25 million
As far as I know, the only exception to the repeater tax mandate was for an true star player. So, as a consequence, that meant that the Rockets really needed to move Knight's contract without taking on any salary for 2019-2020. So the options were very limited.

The Rockets thought they had a deal with Memphis, but they pulled out. The deal with Cleveland surrounded JR Smith and the Rockets taking some salary next year. The Rockets were able to include a second rounder and convert that into Shumpert, who fills a true need, who has no guaranteed money and we have Bird rights to.

Also, the Rockets are still open to adding a 4/5 player I am told, if one is available in the right deal. The Rockets are not necessarily done, regardless of what some reports are. They do not feel the need to make a trade, just to make one, but are open to doing so.

The buyout market is also very strong. I criticized the Rockets for holding onto the MLE for dear life, but it appears that unlike previous years, this could be the strongest buyout market ever.

Players that are possibly going to be available include:

    Markief Morris
    Wesley Matthews
    DeAndre Jordan
    Robin Lopez
    Channing Frye
    Wayne Ellington
    Wilson Chandler
    Luc MBah Moute
    Jeff Green

So there will be players available in the buyout market.

The Rockets could also attempt to get under the luxury tax this year, so they can go over it the next two seasons.

Yup. To give up his shooting and spacing it needs to be for a star or covington type player.

People are upset about losing Melton to dump Ryno and then losing a protected FRP to dump the contracts we got back for Ryno when Ryno was traded for Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington - two players the Rockets could have really needed.

Ryno re-structured his deal so he would be traded - he wanted out and I have no idea if he was willing to restructure the deal just for Phoenix (if he felt he could be a part of a rebuilding team with Ariza and the young guys. If he wasn't willing to do the same for Miami then there would have been no way to trade him then. Phoenix MAY have done Ryno dirty by getting them and not playing him and then shipping him. Secondly we have no idea if Riles even wanted to deal with Morey. Riley is one of the few GMs/Presidents I can see not making a trade to prove a point or for his own ego. Remember Morey also stole Bosh and Riley was forced to give him a 5th year which ended up hurting the franchise because of Bosh's injury. I am sure Riley probably holds some ill feelings towards Morey because of that. He probably was hoping Bosh would just resign a smaller deal and not be forced to give a 5 year max.

Now that being said if people crying Luxury Tax! and all - I mean thats not something Morey can control - if his boss is telling him that than he needs to follow what his boss asks him. Despite all the Tillman is wasting Harden's prime etc and all this was the bench at the start of the season:

    Gordon, Green, Melo, MCW, Nene

    this is the bench now:

Gordon, Green, Rivers, Shumpert, Faried, Nene, Sauce Castillo (ok this is just me hoping we can have a fan favorite white player again a la Bob Sura, Barry, Bowen, Novak etc. I dont think the Rockets will keep him)

We also still have a little over 3M in MLE money to sign a potential buyout to help bolster the SF/PF area. OR we can bring back Daniel House

We desperately need Clint back because he brings so much to this team. If you want to to think this team like a car then everyone is the engine, Harden is the driver but Clint is the transmission allowing Harden (or the team's offense/defense) to go from one gear to another (ie the offense becomes far more diverse and allows far easier baskets or open looks - the defensive rebound and having a shot blocking presence on defense)

There was a reason why the Rockets record obscene when Paul, Harden and Capela all played together and this season the team played way better when Paul was out and Capela in compared to Capela being out and Paul being back.

If this team is healthy heading into the playoffs and if the 3M is used for another SF type player or if we just bring House back I actually feel the team this year is more capable and versatile than last year - now whether or not we have the same chemistry or hunger is a different story. But I feel that guys like Gordon, Tucker, CP3, and Harden (yes even him) will ratchet up the intensity once the playoffs start.

    Harden/Rivers
    CP3/Gordon/Green
    House or MLE addition/Shump
    Tucker/Faried
    Capela/Nene

Yeah I rather have that lineup instead of the one we had last year. Not having homecourt throughout though will hurt (though the TC crowd sucks) but i would rather play game 1,5 and 7 at home instead of on the road.

In and out so far this season

Melo, MCW, Chriss, Knight, House, the Italian shooter( I don’t even rennet his name), Qi, Nanu

    Dudes off Waiver
    house, Rivers, Faried

Two more guys soon to be cut

This is, if you ask me, is not a good management style to bring the team one game away from Championship to the promise land.

There is something to be said/desired about managing this team like a real basketball team

So don’t be so quick pat ourselves that we done well. What have we done this year so far Basketball wise outside Jimmy’s individual brilliance.?

That doesn't sound like a rumor to me; more like a columnist thinking it's a good idea and proclaiming it a rumor. He says, "There is still speculation regarding Houston's interest" in Mirotic, although he never says it's the team that's speculating. Then takes a single tweet by Kevin O'Connor saying that a Shumpert-for-Mirotic trade would work, salary-wise, and somehow turns that into a "rumor."

Personally, I'd rather have a good defender who's an above-average 3pt shot than an excellent 3pt shot who can't defend in a switching defense.

And it only cost the team a First Round Pick! What a steal!

The Warriors getting better has nothing to do with us suddenly being trash defensively

I just hope Boogie isn't as good of a passer from a post(but he probably is) because we are ****ed if he passes out of double teams for open threes

I'd be shocked if we flipped Shump. SHOCKED. CP3 loves him, Harden loves him, Coach loves him and Morey has tried for 3 straight years to get him.

Yeah the 1st rounder hurt but I don't see how you get out from under Knight's contract without compensation.

You do it by taking on money that come along with a player who can actually contribute.

Phoenix just turned Ryno (who cost the Rockets Melton to exchange for Knight) into Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington, for example. No picks needed because they were willing to eat Johnson's salary. Tilman isn't. Johnson is actually good.

8 games played, 21 minutes per game, 3.9 assists per game. Yes, he is a good passer, especially in that offense with those shooters.

I’m not going to say Morey did great, but he did make the Rockets better. Also, has everyone complaining about losing a late first round pick forgotten that Morey and his staff are among the best at finding 2nd round and undrafted gems?

As for the Warriors, the Rockets can now alternate CP3 and Gordon on Curry, have Shumpert chase Klay, put Tucker on KD, give Harden rest on Draymond or Iggy, and have Capela to guard Cousins when he’s in.

He is, but I'm hoping them playing more big makes it a more conventional matchup where Clint can beast more. He dominated KAT and Gobert in those two series, but has never been the same playing against the Warriors when they go small. Clint BRINGS it when he's playing against a top center, if he's matching up against Boogie for 20-30 minutes a game that could actually make it a more conventional matchup for us.

There's also the possibility James makes Boogie borderline unplayable when he ISOs on him. Boogie is the Warriors' 2nd worst player behind Quinn Cook in defensive field goal percentage. What's more, players are shooting 47%(!!!) on 4.9 3-pointers defended by Boogie so far this year. For reference, Draymond gives up 37.9% on 5.8 attempts

He's in a tough situation with Tilman pretty much dictating moves must be made to shed money, but yeah, Shumpert should fit decently well. If we can swing a 2nd move, that'd be great.
