"First and foremost, he's a defensive presence," former Kings star and current broadcaster Doug Christie said of Shumpert. "He's a guy who locks up on the defensive end. He can shoot and stretch on top of the fact he's an incredible personality.

"When he walks in the room, he's a breath of fresh air. He keeps things light. These guys over here absolutely love Shump. They love what he brought in swagger and the competitive nature he brought to the practices."

That competitive attitude, Christie said, will make Shumpert a good fit for the Rockets' switching defensive style.

"He's going to fight (big men)," Christie said. "When you are talking nowadays about all the switching that goes on, you're not going to just post him up. You're not going to just beat him up. He's going to fight and claw. That's another thing these guys respect about him. He gets to go to a contender and he has the ability to take that team to another level."
Shumpert, who is considered an outstanding defensive player, is averaging 8.9 points per game, making 36.6 percent of his 3-pointers this season. He is in the last season of a four-year, $40 million contract worth $11 million this season. Shumpert was part of the Cavaliers 2015-16 championship team.

"I think he'll fit in fine," Austin Rivers said. "He's a very capable defender. Adding defense to this team helps in a lot of ways. We obviously have a lot of offensive power as is and he is no slouch on the offensive end. You have to respect him. The best thing he adds is championship experience. On a team that's striving to win a championship, adding someone like that is always valuable.

"He's definitely an entertaining guy. I'm excited for the conversations he and Gerald are going to have, that we can all be a part of. It'll be fun."

"Another level" could technically mean anything. Obviously that level is up, according to Christie, and I hope he's right.

I think he's a better defender than his reputation. I dug up an old post (roughly a year old) on https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=1740188 where the poster compiled 5 years of DRPM (defensive real plus minus) data and ranked players by position. Generally speaking, stats like DRPM are a bit whacky but looking at the rankings it seems combining a very big sample size yields better results. You can go to the link to see how those rankings look.

Anyway, Shumpert ranked 4th out of 72 Shooting Guards defensively (2012 to 2018). Here are the top 20:

    SHOOTING GUARD
    1 Andre Roberson 2.44
    2 Danny Green 2.16
    3 Jimmy Butler 1.41
    4 Iman Shumpert 1.19
    5 Victor Oladipo 0.99
    6 Tomas Satoransky 0.74
    7 Manu Ginobili 0.67
    8 Vince Carter 0.52
    9 Kyle Korver 0.50
    10 DeAndre Liggins 0.22
    11 Jaylen Brown 0.21
    12 Justin Holiday 0.00
    13 Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot -0.01
    14 Kentavious Caldwell-Pope -0.09
    15 Kent Bazemore -0.16
    16 Langston Galloway -0.23
    17 Avery Bradley -0.27
    18 Corey Brewer -0.31
    19 Reggie Bullock -0.31

Take into consideration he's having his best season ever right now too.

When you start on ground zero with Marquese Chriss & Brandon Knight, yes, the only level is up.

He is a good defender but taking us to the next level that's exaggerating

He's an absolute beast defensively, I already knew that and I think that's his reputation so I don't think he's underrated.
The question is can he hit the open 3, his career percentage is same as Ennis so that's kind of meh, also hes only 6'5, he always looked taller to me maybe due to his athleticism.
It would be nice to have a 6'7-9 3D wing like ... you know Ariza or Luc but it's been said a thousand times

All we need is to replace Ariza. Maybe Rivers, Faried, Shumpert and whoever else we add can do that?

Will be decent veteran depth on an expiring contract. The Ryno contract has been exorcised.

Shumpert will be a great add and all - but defensively he can only do so much - we need longer humans out there to guard the rim!!
