This is pretty much my take on Morey. He is a very good GM, not overrated by most people. Some posters here defend him as if he is a god that never makes mistake. Those are the ones who overrate him. However, there are also some people here that blame Morey for every loss. Threads like this one is a testament of him being UNDERrated by some.
I agree. You can't be a mastermind best of the best genius GM and have nothing to show for it. Somewhere in there maybe he made a couple mistakes, or didn't look at the personal side or chemistry well enough. Once we win a Championship I will be on his bandwagon, but I'm not tooting his horn right now, simply because I am frustrated in what seems like going backwards defensively. If we are this bad defensively without Clint we better fix this quick.
He is a good GM, has had bad luck. He isn't in the class of Angie or Ujiri. I also think Presti has learned quickly from his losses and has been creative than him lately. His biggest problem can not be corrected, his lack of basketball playing experience. It causes him to overrate players eg MCW, and underrate the impact of House's absence. I'm not implying that House has star potential.
Is that really lack of basketball, how you value guys on very low contracts? I mean Presti's team is top heavy and surrounded by players on rookies deals or small contracts.
Morey is a good GM that happened to get his superstar during the time of the rise of the best team ever in the NBA.
MCW was not likely to be a success. Morey was thrilled at having him and thought he could be an impact player. Ennis was okay for his contract. Giving up Melton is not likely to be a big problem, but Knight was badly injured, like Wright. That hurt us too, although I admit there was no other way at getting rid of RA. His recent drafting got us Nanu, a complete waste. Zhou was okay for a 46th pick, but Vanvlett went undrafted. Edwards had a injury history before the draft. Dorsey over DJ. Is this not partially on Morey?
Morey is a good gm, definitely far from the best in the league. His haters need to gtfo as do his nuthuggers
MCW was on a partially guaranteed, minimum contract which should tell you how much Morey actually thought of him. He took a very small chance on an oversized guard. He also recently Melton who is playing for a shitty Suns team and Hartenstein is second year player who is doing well in the G league. He drafted the second best player on our team, Capela, several of his first round picks are on playoffs teams, and Harrell (2nd rounder) is doing well on the Clippers. We picked up House and Gary Clark too. Of course it's partially on Morey, but whats's your point? Presti and Ujiri never played basketball and they are GMs on the same level of Morey in my opinion.
Was the team with Barkley, Kevin Johnson, Majerle great? Yeah. Was Stockton and Malone one of the greatest duos of Alltime? Yeah. But there were even greater teams. (Bulls, Hakeem......) He just stops at being borderline great and then puff, no motivation to follow thru. Why can't the Rox be the Hakeem team again?
Ujiri played college basketball for Bismarck State and Montana State Billings from 1993-1996. This gives you a better perspective on how tough basketball really is. The Raptors have more depth than us and now they have a true star in Leonard too. Presti converted Melo's contract to Schroeder this season. That's why I'm saying he has outperformed Morey this season. House was picked up and now he is in the G-League. I like the Clark pickup though, but what would have been our situation if Faried wasn't bought out or if the Suns didn't waive Austin? I do give him credit for acquiring them. My point is that Morey isn't as great as people think he is. He is a good GM. He got us Harden and Chris/ Eric but our depth is weak.
Also worth mentioning that when Morey decided to hire MDA as our coach, the guy was rotting as a staff member for the tanking 76ers at the time because nobody in the league thought MDA was good enough to coach an NBA team anymore. Morey and Harden basically saved this fool's career, but don't get twisted MDA is still an incompetent and stubborn old hack. My suspicion is that Morey just wanted some kind of figurehead who would blindly follow his orders and implement this extremely ugly and simplistic form of basketball (a.k.a. Moreyball) without ever raising a question, and so far MDA has been doing exactly that. Jacking up 50 threes a game at 27% shooting? Yeah, why not.
My take on DM is he thinks an all star will fix everything at any cost. He will and has over paid for the “golden player”. A LOT of DM’s best move are the ones that fell apart saving him from himself. Older or broken players seem to be his fascination. Think Bosh and others that were let downs at the time then imploded the following season. DM is at the top of league but is frustrating at times.
Morey is not as good as Mavs and Spurs GM (both small markets). I think he is around 6th best GM in the west. Houston is a big market.
