Rick Carlisle: Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis Are New Version Of Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki

Dirk Nowtizki described new teammate Kristaps Porzingis as a franchise-player built for the new, modern NBA.

"If you have a chance to add a franchise-caliber player like Porzingis you've just gotta go for it...he's mobile enough to play the 4. He can be a spread 5. He can move, block shots, post. Before he got hurt he played a great all-around game. He's got the work ethic to be great. He's a good dude," said Nowitzki.

Rick Carlisle added in a pre-game interview show that he thought the 7-foot-3 Porzingis and 6-foot-7 Luka Doncic could form a newer, taller version of the Steve Nash and Nowitzki combo that played in Dallas.

"He's such an amazing player, so this could be a good thing. He's big, he can shoot, he can rebound, he can do a lot of things. I think he can be one of the best players in this league," added Doncic.

    Same old pathetic Knicks.

Dallas has a good combo moving forward with Luka and Porzingis.

if Porzingis can stay healthy and the last 7'3" guy to stay healthy for a long time was Mark Eaton

I don't know. The Knicks are 6 games behind the fifth worst team. I seriously doubt that with Porzingis or anyone they could realistically trade him for they could catch up with Atlanta and drop out of the top 4. And even with a weakened roster after the trade, it's really up for grabs for the four tanking teams who will get the big prize.

With a huge chunk of cap space, the Knicks are poise to sign two max guys.

I heard that Carmelo Anthony is available. He's a perfect star for them. Make the New York Knicks great again!

This is a salary dump move for Knicks. Apparently they were frustrated that KP wasn't on board with the direction of the team, but the rest of it is positioning themselves to have max salary cap available next year.

Meanwhile, this is all good for the Mavs. They've been wanting to move Smith and Matthews, KP is obviously a great pickup, and overall the Mavs also get younger, better positioning themselves going forward.

Keep the powder dry! That worked so well for Cuban!

Yes, this is New York, and not Dallas...but other than that, what would actually entice someone to want to join them? The problem with blowing up your team to get the cap space is...you just blew up your team. So, what do you have to sell?

A day later, I appreciate the "assets" the Knicks got back a bit more.

Created cap space for 2 max.
Got Dennis Smith Jr... who is no Luca, but has upside
2 future first round picks - and those are valuable, even though they aren't for 2 and 4 years

If they don't sign legit max FA guys this offseason, a crappy trade. If they do, probably a great trade.
As much as I love playing with Porzingis on NBA2k18 lol, his on court impact thus far in his career has been WAY overrated.

    Thus far...

So if/when the knicks whiff on the best free agents, are they going to do the typical knicks thing and sign mid tier guys to max deals and pretend all is well?

If you are gonna do some analysis first look at all the 7'3 players in NBA history majority of them like Sabonis, Ilgauskus and Yao Ming struggled with season ending injuries their entire career basically if they suffered a major injury its basically like a dam thats been cracked.

Secondly Kristaps already wanted out of the organization, he has been saying negative press about the team and has been saying will the team in FA so the Knicks were smart dealing him away he could have hurt their FA chances.

Third, the Knicks aren't swinging for the fences, they are putting their eggs in multiple baskets they are trying to tank for Zion, trying to get 2 Max FAs and trying to get 2 lotto picks from Dallas. That's 3 baskets any of them work out the Knicks got ahead in the trade.

What exactly is the gamble for the Knicks here? Keeping an injured player who said he will go away in FA? LOL!

The reality is the one "swinging for the fences", "hitting a pop fly" and "taking a huge gamble" are the Mavs. Do they have a guarantee KP will be healthy? Do they have a guarantee he will stay instead of going to a bigger market? Do they have a guarantee Luka, KP and Barnes are a contending team? Thats 3 crossbones in the dice they are rolling, any of those happen they are dead cuz they are capped out and they have no picks. Knicks won this trade pure and simple.

I'm not sure what having friends has anything to do with having the wrong take lol

They can tank some more and try again next year. Their new GM is doing some work.
