Trade war going as well as everything else in this administration. Basically China is still exporting tons to the US but stopped buying things from the US. They bought a ton more from other countries, though, and their net surplus with everyone else went down. Seems like Trump achieved exactly the opposite of his goals.

China's surplus with the U.S. grew 17 percent from a year ago to hit $323.32 billion in 2018, according to government data. It was the highest on record dating back to 2006, according to Reuters.

Exports to the U.S. rose 11.3 percent on-year in 2018, while imports from the U.S. to China rose a meager 0.7 percent over the same period.

China's overall trade surplus for 2018 was $351.76 billion, the government said. Exports in the whole of 2018 rose 9.9 percent from 2017 while imports grew 15.8 percent over the same period, official dollar-denominated data showed.

While the surplus with the U.S. may have risen, last year's overall Chinese trade surplus was the lowest since 2013, even though export growth was the highest since 2011, according to Reuters' records.

Yet nearly a year after Trump slapped tariffs on imported steel, the U.S. steel industry is not thriving. It is reeling. Steel prices have fallen back to pre-tariff levels. Employment is stagnant. The clearest sign that tariffs are not working, however, is the stock market. If the president’s policies were working as planned, the steel industry should outperform other sectors. Yet as the graphic above shows, since Trump announced steel tariffs on March 1, 2018, steel-producer stock prices have plummeted 22 percent—while the S&P 500 index has fallen only three percent.

So why has the market soured on American steel? One reason is that Trump’s tariffs, overall, hurt the industry far more than they help. Here is how we know. For the first half of 2018, steel-producer stocks followed broad market performance, even after steel tariffs took effect. Then, while the S&P index kept rising, steel stocks took two dives—in mid-June and early August, as the graphic highlights—before re-tracking the market. What happened in June and August? Just before each drop, Trump released lists of imports covered by tranches of his first $50 billion in China tariffs. Since 95 percent of these imports were intermediate goods, purchased by American firms, markets anticipated that the tariffs would push up their prices, reduce their output, and hurt their sales. Tariffs would, in turn, drive down their purchases of domestic inputs, like steel.

Trump trade chief changes terminology after president contradicts him

President Trump's top trade negotiator agreed Friday to modify the terminology he uses about a trade agreement with China after the president contradicted him in an Oval Office meeting. The debate between Trump and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer over the meaning of a so-called memorandum of understanding, or MOU, played out in front of cameras. Trump, Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin were among those in attendance for a televised discussion with a Chinese trade delegation about ways to try to end an economic feud with Beijing.

The discussion revolved around how long memorandums of understanding would last in a trade deal. MOUs have been drafted on issues such as agriculture, currency and intellectual property as a broader agreement is hashed out. Trump told reporters they would “be very short term. I don’t like MOUs because they don’t mean anything. To me, they don’t mean anything.” “An MOU is a binding agreement between two people,” Lighthizer responded. Turning to members of the news media assembled in the Oval Office, he continued, “It’s detailed. It covers everything in great detail. It’s a legal term. It’s a contract.”

But to me, the final contract is really the thing Bob, and I think you mean that too, is really the thing that means something. Lighthizer quickly adopted a new term after the pushback from the president. “From now on, we’re not using the word ‘memorandum of understanding' anymore,” Lighthizer said. “We’re going to use the term ‘trade agreement’ … We’re never going to use MOU again.” Chinese Vice Premier Liu He laughed as the exchange carried on.
