I think both sides were wrong. The one kid who was at the center of attention was unfairly labeled. The other students around him behaved in a racist way. Phillips may have done tons of things decades and years before the incident and may have been dishonest since the incident. But during the incident itself, he did nothing wrong. The media jumped the gun in blaming the one student. Shame on the media Shame on the hate group for the racist comments towards Phillips and other Native Americans and harassed the Convington students. Shame on the other Covington students for their racist actions towards Phillips. I guess Shame on Phillips for all of the unrelated bad things he's done and any dishonesty he did after the incident. Absolutely shame on Phillips for being a fridge mechanic.

The kid may not have said anything racist, but his gang was definitely was racist and teens who demonstrate racism and misogyny need to be condemned for it. The video where you can hear them saying "build the wall" and doing the tomahawk chop. There is also another video of them harassing a young woman. I don't think just because the media screwed up the reporting of this story that it should excuse racism and misogyny. Of course, the right celebrates those things are being good so it's no surprise that these kids are heros. The kids mom even called the Black Hebrew Israelites "Black Muslims" demonstrating the bias and hate in their klan. They can now go back to wearing blackface and taunting their black opponents on basketball courts and the Trumpsters will talk about how white nationalism is misunderstood and there's nothing wrong with seeing whites are superior.
I would have assumed that this long after the narrative fell on its' face there wouldn't be anyone stupid enough to still be trying to go after the kids, guess that was too much to hope for.

It was not at a sporting event but instead at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. And, it wasn't as part of an fanbase using it to show support for their team, but instead it was directed at a Native American, and meant as a show of disrespect.
The conservative defense seems to be, "Gee officer, I didnt know that burning cross in that black man's lawn was offensive. I just wanted to tell him of god's burning love. And you'll never prove otherwise, copper." Playing dumb didnt work in the South in the 60s, at least after the adults in Washington got involved and doesnt work here. It's a criminal law defense when we aren't in a criminal court. I can reasonably infer intentions from actions. If they are stupid enough to think that laughing, jumping around and tomahawk chopping is a sign of respect, they have nobody to blame but their parents for not teaching them the basics about respect.
again. Phillips approached THEM while they were in the middle of a school cheer to kill the time while waiting for their bus. The video taken from BEHIND Phillips clearly shows they were in the middle of one such cheer when he approached their group. All of the alleged "racist" actions undertaken by the students seem to occur within the first 30 seconds of Phillips' having approached their group, then the actions stop. The banging of the drum is something that enters THEIR space while they are minding their own business doing their own cheers to pass their own time. At what point are they supposed to instantaneously interpret what was going on in that 30 second time period as an occasion to demonstrate "the basics about respect" versus anything else other than goofing off to kill the time?
