Rasmussen poll shows Trump with lowest approval in a year

A conservative-leaning poll released Monday showed President Trump with his lowest approval ratings in almost a year. The Rasmussen poll found that 43 percent of likely voters polled approve of Trump's job performance, his lowest mark in the poll since January of 2018, when his approval was at 42 percent. The poll also found that 55 percent of respondents disapprove of Trump's performance, including 46 percent who strongly disapprove. Another 32 percent strongly approve the job Trump is doing.

According to Rasmussen, Trump's approval rating has slipped since his prime-time address last week in which he claimed that a border wall is necessary to confront a "humanitarian crisis" at the border.

Poll: Trump Approval Down, Slips With Base

A new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll finds Trump's approval rating down and his disapproval rating up from a month ago. He currently stands at 39 percent approve, 53 disapprove — a 7-point net change from December when his rating was 42 percent approve, 49 percent disapprove.

As this shutdown continues, 59 percent said they mostly blame President Trump or congressional Republicans for it. And more than 6-in-10 are in the mood for compromise — 63 percent said they want their elected officials to compromise with people they disagree with rather than stick to their positions, including a majority of Republicans. Just 31 percent overall said they want their elected officials to stick to their positions no matter what.

Just 76 percent of Trump supporters, 69 percent of Republicans and 58 percent of white evangelicals say they will definitely vote for him. Many, if not most, of them will likely vote for the president, but their softness in supporting him for re-election is a sign of vulnerability."The president has had his base and not much else," Miringoff said, "and when you look ahead to the election ... he enters with a significant disadvantage. His re-election prospects would definitely be in jeopardy at this point."

Seems that trump's tunnel vision focus on "his base" with moves like his vanity wall and the government shutdown is growing opposition, not with Democrats, but Independents.

The 2020 Democratic Primary is going to be so filled because of how extremely vulnerable Trump is. He's extremely disliked outside of his base, he lost the popular vote to another strongly disliked candidate in Hillary. Most economists expect a downturn in the economy before 2020.

Of course we are still a long way away and big things could certainly happen before then. I really wish Trump could be ousted by Republicans to return sanity to the party.

Trump tweeted on Sunday that his approval rating among Latino residents was up to 50 percent, but it stood at 39 percent among all Americans.

But Trump's approval rating among all Americans declined in the midst of the government shutdown. His approval rating stood at 39 percent, down from 42 percent in December. It also declined among white residents, from 50 percent in December to 40 percent in January.

The president's tweet came as the government shutdown entered its 30th day and hours after he proposed a compromise to break the stalemate.

I will be super surprised if 50% of Hispanics vote for Trump in 2020, if he gets more than 35%, it would be a big victory for him.

More context from PBS on the poll that Trump reference in his tweet. For one thing, they weren't aiming at breaking down racial subsets in this poll. For another, look below:

Additionally, just 27 percent of Latinos who were polled said they would definitely vote for Trump in 2020, while 58 percent said they would not.

In 2016, Trump received 20 percent of the Latino vote, according to exit polls.

When asked whether they will approve of dedicating funds to border security, but not a wall, to end the shutdown, 34 percent supported. Fifty-one percent, however, still opposed that plan.

A majority of voters also believe that Russia has incriminating information against the president. According to the poll, 57 percent believe it’s likely that Russia “has compromising information“ on Trump, compared to 31 percent who don't think it's likely.

Seven in 10 Americans don't think the issue of a border wall is worth a government shutdown, which they say is now having a negative impact on the country. But partisans don't want their own side to budge: 65 percent of Republicans say President Trump should refuse a budget unless it includes wall funding, and 69 percent of Democrats think congressional Democrats should keep refusing to fund it.
