From that point, we see that the boys gathered around him. He saw it as a threat, and probably his perception there was mistaken. Then, he says he decided to exit that situation by walking towards the Memorial from that position and the smiling boy stood in the path he was taking. Did he intentionally walk towards the boy to create a confrontation, or was his target the Lincoln Memorial and he expected them to allow him to pass through? One can read the situation either way, depending on whether they want to attribute malice or not. That wasn’t his reason. Why would he want to confront kids because *they* are being harassed? He claims that he believed the kids were harassing the group of black activists. I see no reason to doubt that was his belief, regardless of whether you think his presumption was unfair to the kids. I’m also bemused by all the people thinking an old man beating a spiritual/religious drum is some sort of threat. If the boy really felt threatened, he wouldn’t have continued to stand there smiling for as long as he did.
Quit the victim crying. The reason they rushed the story is that everyone else had the story up on their site and they had to as well. The competition of legacy media and NOW media with facebook and twitter means a lot of these stories come out rushed. The difference is that the legacy media will back peddle, correct, and further source their story...thus making them more credible in the end because they have a pride in being correct. EDIT: It's also funny to hear so many right wingers here acknowledge that "BUILD THAT WALL" is racist and incendiary...so I'm now waiting for the condemnation of Trump egging on that chant for his campaign.
You need to watch the full footage - I mean, he walks into an empty space and the boys come down and ENCIRCLE HIM. He was trapped well before the face to face with the boy. He didn't going into the crowd, they came down and surrounded him - this is what is so nuts about what you and @Os Trigonum and others keep trying to skip over - what happened before the face to face - you guys keep ignoring that those boys came down from the steps and encircled him.

Your own video shows you are misstating the facts. At :42 Phillips reaches he maximum approach about 3-5 feet away from the wall of boys. He does not move forward for the rest of the video. By the end of the video he is surrounded by the boys who are in his face and jumping around him shouting. So he did approach them but he maintained spacing - they are the ones who closed in around him and became aggressive. Your own video is proof. @dachuda86 @tallanvor

If you watched the video you'd know better. The kids were on the left side of the steps, he approached from the right and intentionally pushed his way into the middle of their group. If he wanted to go up the stairs, he could have without cutting through the middle of their group, there was plenty of room where the stairs were completely open on the right. The reason your spin is less believable than what the video shows happened is because your spin is entirely baseless and is disproven by video evidence. The "elder" is a proven liar.

Of course. It sucks that a kid is having his life ruined when all he did was stood still and smiled while being harassed. If I were him I would sue the **** out of everyone possible. Do you really have no sympathy for what this kid is having to deal with?
